Hi, being a new female MTBer could really do with some advice on what tyres to buy, mainly ride scottish trail centres (7 stanes). Any recommendations would be appreciated (something that also gives good grip in wet/muddy conditions would be a bonus - i'm sure its the tyres fault I fall off!!!)

Bontrager mud x. Good in mud but can also handle trail centers

I'd recommend a part-worn Conti Vapor 2.1 folding on the front and a hand-me-down Panaracer Fire XC-Pro 2.1 with a big gash fixed with gaffer tape on the rear. Seems to work for my girlie and she rides the same sort of trails as you

mud x are decent for muddy gloopy conditions but not to good on wet rock and roots.. and hard pack/dry trails you can feel the knobs flexing and squirming,, not good for the less confident rider..
something like a maxxis high roller or minion these are more downhill type tyre good grip but do drag.
    maxxis ardent or maybe advantage..
or if it's really bad sloppy muddy then a maxxis swamp thing,

I use maxxis advantage F+R for XC duties. Grippy, fast (really good for trail centre surfaces), seem to last a while, and cheap too. when it gets muddy, I just hold on tighter! :D

  • Thanks for the advice and replies, think i'll possibly give the maxxis a try....... unless of course I can find some hand me down/part worn tyres that would do the trick instead!! (vmgscot - any suggestions?)

If weight isn't a problem get wired single ply high rollers, 60a compound 2.35width, last ages, loads of grip and roll pretty well on trail centre surfaces, about £24 each at CRC.

If you're staying on-map at the stanes you can use anything tbh, so just a case of finding something not too slippy and not too draggy. Advantages maybe? Superb tyres for built trails, and decent at natural trails that are in decent nick. But they'll struggle with unsurfaced muddy trails, if you go up the pentlands just now and go on the natural stuff you want mud tyres, and possibly scuba gear.
