Hi
Looking for ideas on how to plan a route cycling from Sunderland to Nottingham(in the summer)
Avoiding main roads i.e A1,A19 etc, and having a 1 night stay in yorkshire

It's a fair old trek to attempt in two days if you're not using main roads. I cycled back from Osmotherley in North York Moors to Hucknall in September via Beverley and Gainsborough using mainly minor roads. It was 177 miles.
If I were doing it I'd do it in three days and come down the North Yorks coast then Beverley - Humber Bridge - Gainsborough or Lincoln - Newark - Nottingham.

The first bit from Sunderland past Middlesbrough looks tricky.
  • I did York up to Gateshead avoiding busy roads (the A167 has a cycle path running alongside it) if that's any help. I've just adapted it to end in Sunderland http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=339406
There are some hills over the moors but the views and villages make them worth it.

this is someone elses route. I know these roads and they are ok, but i like to find smaller roads if possible.

here is a route I have used a lot to doncaster, then via selby bike path to york.going south you can branch toward nottingham after teversal

plus some features of this are worth considering

but cyclestreets seems to do a very good job. I would use the green route as much as possible. south of barnby dun the brown route looks quite nice. you would get away with 23mm tyres on the cycle paths. I have done. But 28+ marathons would be better.

  • I could understand why anybody would want to get out of Mackum land, but you could pick somewhere better than Nottingham.

Only Joking. Hope your ride goes well
  • Hi i live in copmanthorpe on the outskirts of York and there are some cracking road and routes btween york and the A1 area. Some ideas:
From Selby you can follow the trans pennine upto york and onto the old railway tarmac all the way up to York college.

Roads from Sherburn to church Fenton or into Tadcaster up to Cattel over the bridge and follow up to Boroughbridge or easingwold and can even attempt White Horse bank some cracking scenery onto the Hambleton hills.

    Hope that helps and enjoy.
