Need a waterproof/winter jacket. My Aldi jacket is rubish! I am looking at the Altura Kinetic Waterproof Cycling Jacket and Altura Pocket Rocket Waterproof Cycling Jacket. Whch one is better? Budget is £50 and it has to keep me warm too for the winter - ofcourse I will be using layers. Thanks

both are good (got both of them!) Kinetic has a lining and is far more substantial (will take the odd wack) but isn't as breathable...use mine with just a base layer on. Pocket Rocket is totally different...I use it as an emergency jacket (which is really what its designed for) so you need jersey at least under it. All depends what / how you ride and what you want from a jacket...their both great in their own fields though.
  • Also got the kinetic and would highly recommend it.

Thanks alot for that! It really helped. Will get the Kinetic as I will be wearing the jacket on my daily commute to from work this winter.

I have used a pocket rocket. Agree its an emergency jacket, or useful as a windstopper. I used to use an Altura Nightvision, very waterproof but the downside is how hot you get after a few miles.

Recently got a Foska Toastie. Very warm, very water repellent. Double your budget though I think you get what you pay for. Parents gave me a Gore Windstopper, haven't tried it out yet but told its like the Toastie.

If you're on a tight budget then take a trip to any of the outdoors/camping stores as you might get a deal. Add in a sam-brown reflective and a couple of cheap armbands or reflective gloves and you might save a few quid.

These are normally £40, only £30 right now (alleged RRP £90). I use one on it's own down to -2C, it stands up well to rain as well.

I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Just got myself one of these, yet to try it though. Just how water resistant / proof are they ? You say they stand up well to rain, does it it still keep you warm should any water come through ?

  • I was going to ask the same question myself. I too have a cheap jacket, a Sports Direct Karrimor, it wasnt too bad when new but the water gets through it in under two minutes now, what do you expect for a tenner eh :)

After a bit of research I have narrowed my search down to the Altura Night Vision, Night Vision Evo or the DHB EQ 2.5, these are possibly out of your price range?

Slight Hi-jack but can anyone comment on these?

On the Karrimor... Have you tried a "tech wash"? Camping shops and some sports shops will usually sell both types (one that washes in the machine, and the other that just sprays on). Might save you spending where you dont need to.
  • I might just give that a try, then I can treat myself at a later date for being a good boy and riding to work in the rain

I've got an Altura night vision evo for commuting. I agree it is a 'bit boil in the bag', but with all the vents open I find it works fine for me. Rode home last night in torrential rain and strong headwind for 12 miles and it kept me 95% dry, and it's comfortable and fits well 8)

I've got the pocket rocket too, but use that as a wind stopper mainly over a baselayer and jersey on my weekend rides, as it folds up really small and fits in my jersey pocket :) Been caught in a few showers and it's been ok, but don't think it would hold up for too long in a downpour :!:
  • Hi All thanks for the response it was a great help deciding. Got the Altura Kinetic (£30) and the Altura base layer (£13) from cyclestore.co.uk. It was the hi-vis one I wanted but its such a step up from the Aldi winter jacket! Like it too. first ride this morning at 6:30am very dark and felt ok with hi-vis arm band and bag cover. It kept me warm over the 5.4 miles. So just a downpour to test wateproofing now - not long for that to happen in this midlands weather.
