    Quite.

Certainly one of the weaker specials. Worth a watch though. Let's face it, there's not going to be anything better on for a while is there?

I have to admit, not the best but still lots of laughs. They're going a bit 'cringe comedy' which I don't like. They needed to stick to the cars more.

Nope, just the usual "Jeremy Clarkson Show" with two sidekicks to bear the brunt of his predictable and over played "comedy" [routine]

It's becoming way too bloody obvious (which it has for quite a few series now as the jokes are always the same, as is the 'special' storylines) and way too little emphasis on the cars themselves.

Still as cwnt said, some things were obvious but fookin funny.

Was boring and predictable. Turned over after 20min.
  • The thing that annoys me about top gear, is that if they're reviewing a car they will point out a few good/bad points that are valid but then come out with some rediculous sweeping statement that people will lap up and repeat to me if we're talking about said car. Say the new McLaren MP4-12C for example, I was talking to someone about it and they said 'it looks good but I'd prefer a Ferrari because the Ferrari is made with passion and the McLaren was made by science!'.

What on earth? Do they actually believe that the Ferrari was designed by some artists in a shed in Tuscany with some hammers and a dream? IT WAS DESIGNED WITH CAD AND A WIND TUNNEL THE SAME AS ANY CAR!! Using the same boring software, the same safety tests, the same scientific principles and using the same boring production line.

I thought the original design was still drawn by hands to create the "concept"....the CAD element is putting the meat on the bones.

Yeah and made out of clay, but they all do this. Ferrari has no more 'passion' than any other car company.

I disagree..some of the cars like Ferrari and the Merclaren are still assembled by hand and yes the empolyees would have more passion in what they do rather than some mong on a ford production line...

  • I watched it last night, and agree with most the comments.

I've been finding it getting more tedious and cringeworthy the last 3 years or so. It's made worse by the fact they're terrible actors, so you know when they're acting, which ruins the 'joke'. I think they need to sort themselves out, but they won't as they get so many viewers and ignore everything they say!

    'Merclaren'?

Well if you're fitting a wiring loom to the front of a car, day in day out to the same model of car for months then how passionate can you be? Be it a Ferrari or a Fiesta you'll find it just as monotonous.

'Passion' is subjective, its utter BS to suggest that for some reason Ferrari workers ruled by some corrupt Italian bureaucrat would have more passion than someone who is genuinely passionate about making the best possible racing/supercar on the the road - Ron Dennis.

Ferrari might have a history of making fast cars, but then by that logic Renault have been racing since 1903 so they're more passionate that Ferrari?

Thing is the format has changed from being a proper motor show aimed primarily at men to something that's essentially family viewing. Wives and kids don't want to see a genuine review of a car, they'd like to see some stupid antics - and that's exactly what they get.

You can slate it all you like really, its a cash cow for the beeb. They get loads of DVD sales from it, sold the format to the US and other countries and have been able to make other successful shows on the back of it.

  • I don't mind the fact it's not a "serious" motoring show though, I'd find that tedious. It'd be like listening to surfmat banging on about his BMW for an hour. As a light entertainment show it's great fun, I just sometimes wish they'd come up with some new material, you know, keep it fresh and all that.
Every stunt on last nights show has been done before, and you could see the set-up a mile off.

A scripted, choreographed show is perfectly fine, but they need to put more effort into it.

The US roadtrip to bonneville (sp), and the christmas special from last year were excellent, and that's what I was expecting this time round.

But when you get to the stage where you have turned a Reliant Robin into a space shuttle and built a 3 story camper van and driven it on the motorway (not sure how they did that even with a police escort!), where do you go next!?

I don't watch it because I think its rubbish. I just think that's what its audience wants, high quality trash TV.

In terms of its format changing, it's changed twice in that sense. It was a serious motor show, then it became a light hearted motor show, now it's a pi$$ taking show that has some very expensive cars in it.
I know that they make tonnes of money off it through DVD sales and selling to other countries etc. but I don't think you know how many complaints the programme gets every week! They get hundreds, but they'll ignore them until the ratings are affected. By the looks of things, people complain, but carry on watching. I'd watch 5th gear if I wanted a serious motor show, but I find it boring. As a result, i occasionally watch Top Gear (Usually on Dave)

    i thought it was good.

it was very obvious (and necessary i suppose) and to be honest, thats what i like about it. i like the austin powers films for the same reasons, they are all basicly the same film, the same jokes and the same plot but i love when the jokes i am expecting turn up to entertain me.

the repetitive nature of last nights episode is exactly what i wanted, i knew the banners would break where they did in the same way as every banner painted on one of their cars is done in such a way that when you open the door, there is a different slogan (just like the 24hr race with the diesel bmw), its funny.

i knew that the fireworks would go wrong and set fire to somthing or cause some kind of incident (just like the camping episode and the car wash scene and the train scene etc etc) and i wasnt dissapointed when it happened.

we all know what we are getting, we shouldnt complain when we watch it and get exactly that.

So why the fark are you whinging about it then ?

Also with regards to my earlier point, yes if you worked for Ferrari or Mclaren you would have more passion than a mong on the Ford production line. It's a niche product with a high reputation therefore they can be more selective employing the right calibre of people. I for certain would have more pride saying that I worked on a 458 Spider than a Ford Ka.

I have had the priviledge of visiting the Mclaren Technology Centre twice, and have also visited Halewood (when it was Ford) they are worlds apart....passionate mechanics and spanner weilding monkeys...

Also Merclaren was a play on words due to their association with Mercedes......
