Anything better than a Specialized Rockhopper @£500?

Hi guys,
Newbie here so go easy I'm just getting in to the wonderful world of MTB and i'm looking to get my first bike. I've done a few light xc trails with the missus around the New Forest and Peak district and did the red run (by myself unfortunately) at Bedgebury forest. I'm not looking to progress much beyond this point at the mo (mainly due to the limitations of my gf's riding ability - hope she doesn't read this! ), but I'm looking for a decent-ish bike that has the scope to be upgraded in the future.
I visited the folks at Evans at their Gatwick warehouse and tried a few bikes around my price point - the Specialized Rockhopper seemed quite comfy and I think I would be happy with it (though reading around a few places it seems the components aren't the best - suntour fork etc - but the frame is alright). The bike has just come down to £500 so I was wondering if there was anything better around that price point, or is that the best out there (not looking for second hand unfortunately).
Cheers guys and happy NY!
