Tyres Exploding

Is it usual for a tyre to explode?

Just pumped up my tyres and having put the bike to one side and tinkering in the garage, there was a sound like a gun going off (I'd imagine, never having been under fire).

I checked the tyres with my thumb, but they were both hard I though that it was something outside
that had gone pop.

On closer inspection, the rear tyre had delaminated. The tube was still hard, but the top layer
of rubber had peeled away.

I'd pumped them up to 90psi or so, and they're rated to 115psi.

They're Schwalbe (sp) Marathons. Bought of ebay, so maybe they were seconds:-(.

By cheap, buy twice it seems. I should've known better.

Z.

How can the tyre be hard still ?
Inner tubes do explode rarely but tyres delaminating ? I've not seen that.

    Photos may help ?
  • I've seen this before on a club ride - someone's tyre went exactly as you described. Everyone was at a loss as to the cause but we concluded it was probably a manufacturing fault.

Had a similar problem with some Specialised Armadillos (but without the bang)! A sort of slapping sound from the front got gradually worse until the tread eventually came away from almost the whole tyre. Fortunately I was close to home by then. When I checked the rear it was starting to do the same. I binned them both and have not used Specialised since. I should have returned them (they were both nearly new) but was too busy at the time.

Is this a common problem with Armadillos ? I had an identical issue this summer but thought it was a a rareity - I did take them back and got a replacement set under "warrenty " although they were just over 1 year old. I was told that it was an uncommon manufacturing defect

If I can prise the camera from my wife's limpet like grasp (she's taking hundreds of pictures of our new grandson) I'll take a picture.

The treads seems to have come away, leaving the corded part of the tyre intact.

Looks like a manufacturing defect. FYI, that's not the inner tube you can see; it's the next layer of the tyre carcass. If the inner tube were exposed it would be bulging through like a post-Christmas beer belly.

send a email to Schwalbe as has been said that does look like a manufacturing fault.

I've had schwalbe marathons for a tough adventure race on my cross bike. Most people rode mountain bikes as there was some nasty offroad. My schwalbes did the race twice and haven't let me down once. Great tyres.

Yes I'd send the photo off - that's very odd.
  • Jesus i have worked in the cycling industry for more than 15 years and i can quite honestly say i have never seen anything like this. I personally used to deal with warranties and bead splitting, tyres bulging were a common occurrence across the board but naught like the OP has experienced.

It's not the tyre at fault. The fault is this = Schwalbe
I had a very bad experience with the Schwalbe Ultremo ZX Folding Tyre, it decided to split right down the seem and it went a good halfway round the rim which totally put me off them. When this failed, I had to go skating on my rim, which I wasn't pleased about.
I then converted to Vredestein and touch wood have not looked back since. :D
