This is my first serious road bike. It`s a carbon framed Scott hmx addict jobbie.
I find that when i`m riding using the turbo trainer and i look down towards the chain rings i can see side to side movement in this area(above 230 watts)
So is this a common thing amongst carbon frames on turbo trainers?
Does this flex mean loss of watts? forward drive on the road
What frame have you run or do you ride on the turbo trainer and have you noticed any flex round the bottom bracket area?

  • Now that is interesting. I was wondering whether it was movement or a trick of the light. Alu triple TCR

If the frame was absolutely rigid with no flex, it would be quite uncomfortable and skitter about on the road - besides the wheels and tyres flex far more significantly. Overall, you're talking about insignificant amounts of power loss.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I was always told never to use a decent bike on a turbo trainer because the trainers feck your frame in eventually - hence I have a dedicated "turbo" bike that never goes anywhere else. The frame I use is a steelie so there's a fair bit of wobble when you really put an effort in, but it has never really bothered me.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

Find me any evidence of anyone busting a frame on a turbo and I'll change my mind but there's nothing to worry about IMO.

  • I don't have super strong evidence but I do suspect it might have happened to me.

I have a bianchi 1885 alu/carbon frame. When it was about 18 months old I ran it on the turbo one winter. The following spring the frame began to make strange uncurable creaking noises. It later snapped where the seat stay meets the drop out.

I have no direct evidence it was the turbo, and I am a Clydesdale... But it resonated in my mind as that's right where the frame clamps into the turbo.
