New Hardtail - Frame or complete build

Currently have a c1995 Giant ATX770. The bottom bracket is shot and cannot be removed without breaking the frame. I'm, therefore, going to have to buy a new bike. (Over the years, I have replaced everything else on it, and fitted disk-brakes)
While the 770 has a lot of sentimental value, hind sight shows it was not the right bike for me. I had to use an extended stem, and had to push the saddle as far back as possible to try and get a comfortable ride.
Given I'm 5'10 with a 29" inside leg, and have about £750 - £1,000 or so to spend - what frame/bike (make, size, etc) would you recommend I go for? I appreciate you have to actually ride a bike to get a feel for it, but with so many to choose from, I was hoping for a little guidance.
Cheers

Looking for something I can use to go for a 50km bike ride on or off road. Live in wiltshire, on the edge of the Cotswolds. We do travel to Forest of Dean and a couple of other places in Wales.0
