HI all
In the new year im going to start to build my new Santa Cruz Nomad . I've got all the bits sorted/robbed off my Cove lol.
However theres one area still to be decided ,and dicussed over our post ride beers .
Im looking for a brake thats got that "bang" of a Formula brake but the reliability of a Hope .
Currently running Formula Puro's 203mm and love the feel of them , however anyone out there who too uses Forumla brakes will know that some days if they feel like being difficult they start to stick , squeel or fade , months can pass with no dramas and then one ride they play up lol
Im open to all suggestions and would like to hear others view on products and opinions on feel and power
Cheers
Steve

Exactly, which is why Istruggle to reason why he should change from what he's got unless you do want burn 350 notes on some new XTR0

A wee bit of occasional maintenance- cleaning and lubing pivots etc- would probably keep your formulas working as they should... Best brakes out there IMO.Uncompromising extremist0

Out of 7 of us that ride each weekend 4 of us have formula and every single one of us will agree that they are awesome brakes but have all had dramas with them at some point .
Had a go on my mates bike who's got the ones fitted and they are out of this world , but is always having to clean and lube the pots or they just wont play .
That said i must admit that im tempted by a set . Anyone run Avid ?0 -
You run a stipidly massive rotor, expect to get more troubles.0

whats stupidly massive about 203mm ?0

As they are probably the lightest most powerful brakes you can buy at the moment...the 2012 XT shares some features....I have seen them for £225 the pair..

Exactly my thoughts.. someone obviously typed first and thought later..0 -
Service the formulas.
They are still less hassle than most other brakes out there. The ones bat are less hassle are not as good.

Use anything for long enough and it'll give you some gyp. But I run 4 sets of Oros and they've all been very good. If your mates' brakes are always needing cleaned and lubed, they're marginal in the first place- there'll be an underlying issue, dirt or corrosion under the seals almost certainly.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Like better heat dissipation that would reduce brake fade ? the contact point from disc to caliper will always be the same no matter how small or large teh rotor0 -
Simply this "days if they feel like being difficult they start to stick , squeel or fade , months can pass with no dramas and then one ride they play up"
Bet that was a day where the rotor took a knock, the bigger a rotor, the more suspectable it is to the elements and the more it can flex after all they are on the same mounts, big or small, with most only adding extra metal to make it bigger, not relatively stronger too to compensate.0 -
i have avid elixirs on one bike
hope tech 2 on another
and formula mega on the 3rd.
formulas are the best i run the mega's they been on since sept 08 and been fine only issue i had was a bent disc, (and no before you say,, it was a 180mm) and it was my fault..
had the hopes since oct last year they been faultless nice feel but do lack power.
avids came on the dh bike had this since 09, not really an avid fan to be honest imo they lack feel,, they feel very wooden..
if i was after new brakes and could afford them i would go for the new xtrs, they look amazing and score really good reviews. failing that i would look at formula....www.bearbackbiking.com

I went from Hope Mini's on my old bike to Formula RX on the new one (both with 180 discs)
Now I'd never go back. Stick with Formula.0 -

Still not thinking.
If it was just the one day it played up, and not every ride after that, the rotor had nothing to do with it!0 -
