Uploading Avatars and pics in posts

Hi,

I wanted to know why i am unable to upload pics i have taken on my camera? I wanted to upload a pic of my bike for the avatar and i am currently discussing problems with my gears for which i wanted to attach a pic in the post.

Any help would be great
