  • take it you've tried haynes manuals? they're quite good.

Gives you a sort of head start on what you want to do but leaves just enough untold so you still feel like a man when you figure it out.
Pain is a momentary lapse of character.

Zen and the art of road bike maintenance is frequently mentioned here.

I prefer to browse the internet though.
Park Tools website has some comprehensive guides to most stuff.
Sheldon Brown is another source of information on just about everything cycle related.
Shimano techdocs has exploded diagrams / parts lists / service instructions (other manufacturers' websites are available)
Youtube has videos of people fixing / dismantling / installing almost anything, and seeing somebody doing it is often much more helpful than written instructions / still pics.
  • Thanks,

The things i want to know are things like compatability between manufacturers (if there is any) stuff like BB sizes gear mechs (long cage etc) and what all that means.

Have a browse around in Sheldon Brown's pages. Encyclopeadic knowledge, and the search works quite well.

Compatibility wise, Campag is best mixed with Campag, while Shimano and SRAM share the same freehub spline pattern and cassette sprocket spacing, but the rear mechs use slightly different cable pull.
