i need a new chain pretty soon but is there any point in buying one now in the winter or will it just get messed up with the great winter weather?
what will do more damage, a worn chain or a new one getting messed up?

it depends how worn/streached things are.
I would fit a new one."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If in doubt, fit a new chain. Its a good rule for life I would say. I'd ask the shop if they'll sell you a workshop one cheaper (unboxed but otherwise same chains - limited types though obviously).A Flock of Birds

Fit a new chain, no two ways about it in my opinion. They aren't expensive.
I have just bought and fitted one of these, a bargain I do believe. Pretty sure it is a X9.99 which are usually over £20
