Hi guys, quick question regarding a 2nd hand Hybrid bike purchase.

I've never owned or considered a hybrid before, but will have a 7 mile commute to a new job along the road.

I've found a couple of 2nd hand bikes, one a Trek 7.5 FX Hybrid 2011 or a Boardman Hybrid Comp (2010-2011), cant really decide which to go for. The Trek is about £50 more expensive, but the Boardman has disc brakes. Don't think the brakes are really an issue, but being new to this I can't really figure out which would be best.

Both bikes I think have standard spec from the factory (no add-ons), I don't have a list of spec on the Trek, but the Boardman is as follows:

Gearing
Derailleur Front Shimano R440
Derailleur Rear SRAM X5
Gears 18
Shifter(s) SRAM X5 9 speed
General
Bar Ends Ritchey Comp
Handlebar Ritchey Flat OS 31.8mm
Headset Semi integrated cartridge bearing
Headset Spacers Full carbon 4x5mm, 1x10mm
Rigid Forks Lightweight aluminium
Saddle cboardman, Cro-Mo rails
Seat Post Ritchey 27.2mm
Stem Ritchey OS 31.8mm
Weight 23.8 lbs
Wheels
Hubs Sealed bearings
Rims Lightweight disc specific
Spokes Stainless steel double butted black
Tyres (Front & Back) Maxxis Detonator 700x28c
Wheel Size 700 c

Appreciate any comments on what you'd go for?

Many thanks,

Boardman - simply the best Hybrid around. Read the reviews - its all true and no hype. Really light and begs to go fast.

If you can stretch, go for the Boardman Hybrid Team rather than the comp - it adds Carbon Fibre forks and a whole host of other upgrades.
  • Thank you for the reply, appreciate it. I'd love to get a Team, but all down to what is available 2nd hand and can't find one in my price range currently, so will stick with the comp (first Hybrid anyway... :-))
  • I have a Boardman Hybrid Comp, and it's a lovely bike. Thoroughly recommend.

I picked up a brand new 2011 Boardman Comp for £380 - is that over your budget? Cracking bike.

  • Hi Maddog, that sounds good, I'd pay that for one...

The more I save the more I can spend on stuff like lights, hi viz jacket etc...
