Hi, yes I have read the 9 and 10 speed compatibility post in FAQs........

Quick question, which I didn't see covered. Can I buy a new 10 speed double chainset (eg XT) and run it with my existing 9 speed chain and cassette? 18 gears would be enough for me. I presume you can adapt a normal 3 stop left hand shifter and use it for a double chainset?

Thanks - main question is the 9 speed chain on a 10 speed crank.

Yes and no.

The crank yes the shifter mmmmmmmmmm see what it says,

I would just fit rings of the size you want to the crankset you have now.

So much easier and cheeper.

Naver use an old chain on a new crank, will wear it down fast.

Where's a good source of chainrings to fit Shimano cranks? I've been looking for a 27T; Middleburn?

Shimano? Can't go wrong with a steel middle ring £13 they last for ages. Keep your granny ring, throw on a bash ring & away you go.

The bash ring will stop you accidentally shifting into '3rd' so there's no need to adjust the shifter or the mech.

I would still adjust the mech saves the chain trying to climb on the bash when you forget.

Err just set the stops on the front mech as most people do.
