Gear inches

Apologies if this has been asked before but I'd like to change the gearing on my FR bike.
Setup at the moment is an 11-28 cassette with a 36T chainring. I can just about pedal it to and from Stile Cop but I'm mostly in the lowest three gears.
I would like to fit a smaller chainring so that I use the middle gears more and still have the lowest gears for the climbs
Would a 34T chainring do it? I know there's a formula to work it out but I can't remember it. Cheers.

yes or fit a wider spread cassette then you will not lose your "top" speed.
a 32 or 34 - 11"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

if you want to mess with some numbers Sheldo has a calc on his pages."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
