Hello, all.
New member on the forums. I've been lurking for a while and sucking in information.
I used to do a lot of mountain biking in the late 80's and early 90's, starting with a Saracen Tuff Trax in '88 and then a Saracen Kili Flier Comp in '91, until knackered knees put paid to it (I blame biopace chain rings  ).
I've since had both knees repaired and in 2008 bought a Giant XtC 3.5 and starting hitting the trails again.

A couple of weeks ago I took the plunge and went full sus: What a revelation!
Anyhoo, I bought a Spec' Stumpy Comp and she is a beauty.

Only had a few rides so far but did the Verderers Trail in the Forest of Dean last weekend and loved it. :D

Really looking forward to next year now and getting out and about more.

    Hi mate,

Can't see the pics at the mo but I'm sure the Spec is lovely :D

Have a look at the 'South Wales Rides?' thread, lots of local rides organised, more so round Cwmcarn than FOD but plenty always going. If you fancy doing some DH @ Cwmcarn there's normally a few of us who attend semi regularly.

    have fun

The Giant looks a nice enough bike but I'm loving the Specialized, enjoy it.

    You'll love the Stump.

Btw make sure theres enough cable slack under the BB for when the bike suspension fully extends so it doesn't grind against your BB. Luckily I noticed it on mine before it got bad.

    Thanks for the tip, Briggo.
The Stumpy will be getting a wash today so I'll check it then.

  • I've just picked up one of these 2011 models for a great price, unfortunately there's an issue with the fork so I've not been able to ride it yet.

Has anyone taken the red rim tape off? It doesn't offend me as such but I'm tempted to take it off, any pics?

I have this bike and mines blue.

Anyway i wouldn't take it off personally, wouldnt that expose the ends of the spokes and possibly puncture tubes?

I think funkybaj is referring to the red stickers that are on the outside of the rims. They look like painted lines but are just stuck on.

Why is it a bad idea? They are only decoration.
Mine have bubbled in places so I'll probably remove them soon as well.
I like the look of them though so may have a go at painting lines on.

    Cos itll look sh*t.
  • Always have great lines on the stumpy,

really a big fan of the 150 edition they did which was slacker angled but thats personal preference, my 2007 stumpy lasted me a good while so you should be loving this :)
  • Hi, its a very plush bike indeed! I bought mine last September and its my first FS as well. Ive been to Verderer's couple of times and never cease loving it. Hopefully will have plenty of time this summer! :D

You can increase the fork travel to 150mm like i did by removing a spacer in the fork leg. I feel it rides much better like this.

    That sounds interesting, bennett_346.
Is there a guide anywhere to doing that?

I can tell you exactly how i did it if you want? It was a fairly simple process provided you're happy with following a couple of sram videos and manuals and have some reasonably basic tools.

That's right, decided to do mine yesterday and I'm happy with the outcome, a bit more subtle. Apologies for the terrible pic:
