Hi all

Tried using the search function but having no luck in seeing if such a bike exists as well as latest copy of CyclingPlus but nowt regarding hybrid bikes that fit my needs. Basically a bike that will fit in the trunk of a VW Golf. I have approx upto £700-£800 to spend on a bike and the only full sized foldable ones are those by Montague bikes.

I then spotted earlier today by one of the car wash people washing my car that he had a MTB with both quick release front and rear wheels and got me thinking surely with both wheels off the frame would indeed fit nicely into the trunk of my car.

However, does the same exist for hybrid bikes and if so can anyone recommend me some models to look into within my price range? Or are the Montague bikes along with their specs the best I can do for the money such as this one http://montaguebikes.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=lx1

Thanking you kind people in advance :)

Ps - to the creator the of beginner sticky 'currently devouring the info in 'cyclecraft' excellent read.

Are you looking at hub gears in particular (like the bike in your link)? If so you won't get one that can take a QR skewer in the rear. You can stick QR skewers into front and rear wheels of almost any bike with regular derailleur gears though.

That said I've got bikes into smaller cars than a VW Golf with just the front wheel removed.

Thanks Godders1 that's useful to know. Quite happy to consider derailleur's if there's anything decent within my price bracket. Just to add looking at quick release to the front and rear because I won't the whole bike to be able to fit in the trunk without folding the seats down.
  • My son has a Dawes Cycles Discovery 501 which is well within your price bracket and has QR skewers front and rear. I'm sure lots do

Yep, pretty much any 'above entry level' bike will have QRs front and rear.

As for fitting it in the boot of a Golf....I don't think my MTB will fit in the boot of my Focus with both wheels removed. It'll fit across the back seats, but that space is wider than the boot due to the wheel arches.

Carrera Gryphon from Halfords is a good value hyrbid with QR both ends, good for a commuter if you get the disc option. All our bikes will fit across the back of my Forester (Impreza floorpan) with both wheels off, even the sons Spesh P1 which is quite tall.

Thanks all, have a few to look into. May have to take a visit to my local Halfords. Although it's never apparent from looking at any website whether the back wheel is quick release as I've not seen it mentioned specifically on websites. The gist I get is that it should be available on most bikes within my price range. Might check out the Boardman range as well as others you've all mentioned. As long as I can attach a pannier rack and it's comfortable (over speed) then it should do the job..

If you fell in love with a bike that didn't have QR front and rear you could just buy one or a pair for a few quid and put them in yourself.

  • Dahon bikes do a couple of folding mountain bikes including the cadenza which had hub gears.

They do cheaper models as well. I had a dahon matrix and can confirm it did fit in the boot of my mk2 golf although I did need to move the parcel shelf out.
