Rear Mech Hangar annoyance

I was out riding today and managed to bend my rear mech hangar. I carry spares so just replaced it on th etrail, After riding for another 20 min, the new hangar snapped off completely. I have replaced them before so feel i did it right again but am still puzzled since i hit nothing to damage the new hangar.
I ride a 06 marin wolfridge. Are there any common mistakes I could have made? Or any other suggestions as to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Make sure you ease pressure on the drivetrain when changing gear, and ensure the mech is set correctly. Chain length ok?0

Yeah everything seems fine,should have just been a simple change over. Well i have one more so can change it tommorow and try riding again.0

Could there have been further damage caused when the original mech hanger was bent? To the drivetrain or frame?0
