Winter Tyres

I know, I know, we've been here a thousand times before, but anyone got some advice for winter tyre selection?
I ride an '07 Clockwork, currently have Continental Speed Kings 2.1s, went out on my local trails this morning, wheel-spinning like a car thief and sliding like Ivan Mauger (the motorcross boys have obviously been in the woods which doesn't help).
I ride in Calderdale/Halifax area, mixed stuff with road in between.
People have mentioned High Rollers and Nevegals, any ideas folks? I'm riding Hit The North in February and, from the videos I've seen, I'll need something that'll cope with mud!

mud x are ok,, maxxis swamp things,,, good.
if you can find them instock anywere Continental Der Baron (black chili) ment to be good...
i used to run mud x's as i say they ok grip well in wet but on hard pack and rocky trails you can feel the knobs flexing...
i been running maxxis minnions as replacemnets to the mud x.. i had no traction issues with the minions...
there is the maxxis wetscream to this is a wet wet wet weather tyre.www.bearbackbiking.com

Panaracer Fire Mud, not quite as good an ultimate mud tyre as the mud X but better when its not ultimately muddy - which is at least 1/2 of any given ride round here!

Tyres are for conditions not for the time of the year.
For really muddy conditions I use a Mud X on the back and a Trailracker at the front.
For wet rock and flooded trails Minions with a sticky on the front as the colder it gets 60a tyres loose grip. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0 -
Do people really change tyres for different conditions every time they go out? I couldn't be arsed!Riding a Merida FLX Carbon Team D Ultralite Nano from Mike at Ace Ultra Cycles, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton 01902 7254440

Depends on the riding you do. I run the Swamp Things in the winter for grip and volume, however they drag and some would not like this.0

i just ride my bike with what ever is on it, it has minions been on around a year now.. i run them all year..
had my bonty mud x on for 3 plus years rode them all year...
could not be arsed or afford to have tyres for the conditions, i would rather be out on the trail riding..www.bearbackbiking.com

Mud X are fantastic at mud, but quite terrible at rocks covered in mud in my experience. And since lots of our mud has rocks in, that's a drawback. I'll still use them as a rear- they give fantastic shove in slop- but never on the front again- I'd sooner just use a Minion or Nevegal or other similiar standard knobbly.
Specialized don't make a Hillbilly in anything other than the DH carcass yet, but it's still an excellent mud tyre. Hopefully we'll see a Control version at some point as it's a hassle to drag around the dualply.
