My kids want these and due to an episode with the Inland Revenue I am able to afford.
I looked at Amazon and it ids beyond me what you need so that they can do something with each on Xmas day.
Are they self contained or do I need to buy other stuff?

  • Wii is self contained - it usually comes with a game package so pick carefully otherwise you'll need to buy the additional games you want.

Xbox is also self contained, again with a games package, but I seem to remember it only comes with 1 controller so you may need to buy an additional controller if you want multi-player use (not all games support this anyway).

Just plug them into a spare SCART socket on your TV.

    Enjoy

The wii is more family orientated with more fun games, the xbox is more of a gamers machine.....

SCART?! Lolz, the year 2000 called, it wants it's standard definition back!

As Pudsey says, the Wii is a 'family' thing with games that look like they're from the N64, which is fine if you're just playing Mariokart, but for a good game the Xbox is better.

One thing to check is that the consoles come with the necessary cables to connect to the TV. HDMI for the Xbox, assuming you've got a fairly modern TV, (I think the wii comes with a cable). You'll be annoyed if the kids open the boxes and there's no cable, although you could nick one from your dvd player/freeview/sky box if you needed too.

    Are you getting the Kinect?

If not, 'just' buy the console, any additional controllers, a HDMI cable, games, and (for the XBOX) the xbox LIVE membership. If you get a PS3 then the online stuff is free, but you can't get a Kinect, and the PS3 equvalent is rubbish.

  • Just trying to keep it easy for a gaming novice - I know that neither the Xbox or Wii come with an HDMI lead bundled, however both of them do come with a SCART adaptor in the box.
I'm not stuck in the year 1999 honest, by the way that Millenium bug sounds like it could be horrendous.

Yeah, I think they both come with SD cables, the Wii definitely does, but it's worth the few quid for a HD cable for the Xbox.

BTW, OP: don't buy some £70 gold plated super high tech cable, they're all the same, just buy a bog standard one.

Having just got a Wii for my boy and having a xbox 360 for me,

The wii is for family, multi player games, scart lead is the easier way to get it up and running.
Xbox 360 is a single player console unless you go for the Kinect, also a lot of the games for xbox are multiplayer via the internet so you can hook up with friends on line, unsure about the wii.

With the xbox get the plug in charger for the controller, worth its weight in gold.
