Advice about buying the Carrera Fury

Hey guys the title says it all really, I'm planning to buy the 2011 new release Carrera Fury (the new model has been out since September) which at the moment will cost me £540 with the current deal they have running online. I'm a casual mountain biker and will mainly be using my bike on road for general commuting but I will be doing a lot of XC as well, fairly simple routes but I plan on finding some more hardcore routes etc to try in the near future! I'd say 600 is my absolute 100% max budget to spend on a mountain bike as I will also need to buy lots of accessories for the bike, I was just wondering what people think of the new fury and it's changed spec etc, is there a better bike for the money? I've done quite a lot of research and the fury seems perfect for me at the moment but I'm not set on it just yet, any comments for or against would be of great help to me! Thanks in advance for any replies.
This is my first post on here and I realise I've not given much info to help people give me advice I've pretty much just waffled on but if there's anything you need to know just ask, also I'm not very good with bike terminology etc so go easy on me! Thanks!

I would not but the Fury, they used to be good value but the new models have been down spec'd....I would follow cooldad's advice and take the Rockrider...better fork, better gears, better brakes...0
-
These two are the best two bikes you see readily available. See what fits.0

Thanks for the replies I was just wondering with the comment about the rockrider having better a better fork, brakes and gears, what is actually better about them and does the fury not have any redeeming features?0

The Carrera has an airfork by Suntour which is not the best fork manufacturer in the world, the RR has a Rock Shox Recon which is coil/air, the Fury has FSA cranks and X5 gears and the RR had Shimano Deore cranks and X7 gearing..the Fury has Elixir 1 and the RR Elixir 3 so again better...
On spec alone the RR would be mine preference though like SS says, try them both.0 -
Thanks for the help, I will listen to what SS said and just try them as it's impossible for me to really be able to differentiate between the 2 specs it's way too technical for me haha, I think I'll really like the riding position on the fury though as I used to have a carrera vulcan which I loved.0

Yup. Almost all of the Carrera's share the same frame, but the more expensive ones have a couple of extra bits welded on for support. I think the super-cheap Carrera has the same frame design but uses "box-section" instead of a rounded tubes for the top and down tube.0 -
Would you say the furys frame is a good one worthy or perhaps a few upgrades?0
-
Yes when stuff breaks. Otherwise, you may as well spend more in the first place.0
-
Yeah that's what I mean I think the stuff on it should definitely be enough for me I just need to go down there and check it out and they might be able to explain some of the equipment on it as well haha.0

While the Fury parts are not quite to the level of the RR, they are not at all bad, the Fury is a very good bike and for some uses better than the RR, it's what is right for you that counts.

I'd say the fork on the Fury is at least equal to that of the Recon, and those FSA cranks are very good too.
Won't go wrong with either bike.0 -
Both very reassuring comments so thanks, I was a little worried about the earlier comment about the fork not being good etc but it's good to know it's still a decent fork. I'm looking forward to going down there and having a proper look!0
-
It has rebound damping, lockout and is airsprung - actually more adjustable than the Recon. The Recon is a bit stiffer and better sealed, but on the trail I'd rather actually have the Raidon.0
-
Ah that's great news then I think the fury actually looks really good as well and I like the idea of the double crankset which I've never had before, I prefer it's simplicity over the triple.0
-
I think your only problem with the bike will be 2x10 gearing for commuting.
I have the 2010 Fury and off road im in middle fnt but commuting im in top fnt.
You cant go wrong with the Fury but think about what you are going to do with it before you buy.0 -
Sorry am I being really thick? Why will that be a problem for commuting? Do you mean because it hasn't got a high enough gear?0
-
The gears are lower, yes. Whether it s too low for you is down to you. I think the large ring is a 36 toother, rather than the usual 42 or 44.0

The previous years carrera fury got 5 stars on this site reviews so id say thats a good start , its got avid elexir brakes and the suntour raidon forks get a decent review and are generally rated higher than the recon s although its prob best to ride both, i wouldnt be led by the bike snobs its a good bike with a good spec and you can upgrade things as they wear out.The family that rides together stays together !

I think you might run out of gears commuting.
When mountain biking you should be ok as most of time its granny ring to middle ring.
Thats my experience anyway.0 -

Yes...but that was last year...the spec isn't as good this year...I am not a bike snob but I know the difference between Sram X5 and Sram X7 and Elixir 1 and Elixir 3....as for the fork Suntour make some shite forks...the Radion may be one of their best but I would still rather have the Recon and like said it's IMO....0 -
Well clearly I'm no expert but I think for me the gears should be high enough I mean for any riding on flat ground the fury has plenty of gears right, isn't It only down hill that I'm likely to encounter a problem?0

Then that's fine, it appears you have already made you mind up....but I would always choose a car with a higher trim level if it was the same price.
To be honest I had a fury years ago and it was a cracker...for me the 2012 has been down spec'd...0 -
My mind isn't completely made up but I don't have a decathlon store for absolutely miles so the fury seems like the best option, also if I have any problems the Halfords is really close. I'm just trying to make sure I haven't missed anything that's going to cause a problem in the future also I think the rockrider is extremely ugly and I still think it's important to have a bike you like the look of as well as the good spec and feel.0
-
I'd say you've made your mind up. There's a halfords near you but not a decathlon, you don't mind a lesser spec'd bike, you like the carrera. I think you just want someone to agree with you on it and you'll definitely get it, there's nothing wrong with that and the carrera looks a good bike for the money so just go and buy it and tell us how it rides. I'll bet a fair whack that you get the carreraRiding a Merida FLX Carbon Team D Ultralite Nano from Mike at Ace Ultra Cycles, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton 01902 7254440

All of what you just said is pretty much exactly right, I've done a lot of research to the point now where I'm beginning to understand most of the terminology and stuff haha. It does seem ideal but obviously I have been lookin around for reassurance but I've done my research and I almost definitely will be getting it as long as it feels good when I go and check it out and I'll be on here to tell you how it goes and stuff. It's just a lot of money so I wanted to make sure I was choosing a good bike. Do you think I'll be alright though with the gear thing? It's only downhill that could be an issue surely I'll have plenty of gears for the flats?0

The RR and Carrera are different types of bike, the Fury more AM (ish) the RR more XC orientated, the Suntour fork is generally considered better than the Recon (but a badge snob won't see that), yes the other parts aren't quite to the same spec but it's not as clear cut as you'd make out. Overall I'd agree the RR is the better specced bike, but if the OP prefers the fury (looks, conveniance, the way it rides) it is still the second best value bike at this price point and may be the best bike for him.
