Changing to QR

The rear wheel on my road bike isn't QR and most of the Turbo Trainers I'm looking at are for QR Skewers.
Just how easy is it to change to QR or is it not at all?

Not easy no - possibly!
Most turbos will come with a QR skewer specific to that manufacturer - but that's a moot point if your wheel is solid axle (as it sounds like it could be - it doesn't 100% follow that if your wheel is non Q/R currently that the axle is solid - but it is more likely to be. My fixed has a hollow axle - but is non Q/R for example).
What is the wheel on your bike?
To use a Q/R skewer, the axle needs to be hollow (so the skewer can go through it).0 -
At the risk of stating the obvious at the very least you'll need a hollow axle to replace the solid one you currently have, and the QR skewer. If it's a standard Shimano hub, I know Wiggle sell the axles, and it would seem to be a simple job to dismantle the hub and swap the cones etc over (ALL OF THIS ASSUMES SOLID AND HOLLOW AXLES ARE THE SAME DIAMETER). If it's something more exotic I can't really advise.
May be easier to get a cheap QR wheel just for tubo use, then you can have a turbo specific tyre on it?0 -
Ignore the Wiggle reference; it's 4mm too long
SJS Cycles do loads of axles. There's a complete replacement Shimano 141mm one complete with cones, bearings, locknuts and spacers for £200 -
Mmm, perhaps not then. I'll just look at Turbo's with normal clamps.
It's just a Boss Equipe with cheap unbranded wheels so I'm not going to start fannying about with the axles. It's not worth it.
Cheers anyway guys.0 -
I've never owned a turbo that wouldn't also work with a nutted wheel.More problems but still living....0

Really? That's what I thought, but the kid reckons it's got nylon cones on it and they're moulded to the shape of the skewer that comes with it.
I also found these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOLLOW-REAR-WHEEL-SPINDLE-QR-SKEWER-NEW-/220782028307?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item3367a26613
Would they be any good?
Is this the one you were on about? http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheels-manufacturing-cromoly-10-x-1-shimano-thread-rear-axle-hollow-quick-release-prod17103/0 -

Changing to quick release is a piece of cake, but why don't you just buy Tacx axle nuts?CAPTAIN BUCKFAST'S CYCLING TIPS - GUARANTEED TO WORK! 1 OUT OF 10 RACING CYCLISTS AGREE!0

Yup, Tacx axle nuts - simple screw on the end and away you go!

Rip-off UK price - they're a tenner if you buy them from Germany (Bike24) but you then have to include postageMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
See I knew you guys would come in handy someday!
I'm assuming they'd be ok to use with a Minoura trainer too and they aren't specific to Tacx trainers..?0 -
The nuts have cylindrical ends and fit most trainers IMEMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
