wheel building

Had a bit of a stack yesterday and have pringled my rear wheel on a Trek Remedy, so looking to have a new one built and thought it might be worth upgrading from the standard shimana hub and bonty rim combo.
Looking at a Spank Tweet tweet rim with prob hope pro 2 hub, seems about £220 ish when built, but what are the big name bike shops ( crc, wiggle, stif, merlin etc) like for wheel building??
Or i could buy a Spank rim and then have it rebuilt onto my hub i've got for £45 I think.

delcol once again reaches for the tin opener and the can of worms....
people will disagree with me here but from personal experience..
dont go to merlin for your wheels building the spokes will come loose some will snap the wheel will be out of true and cost you money to get repaired then rebuilt..
like i say this is from experience of a merling custom wheel build on pro 2 hubs macic rims... the shop in whistler who repaired the wheel and rebuilt said it was a shonky build...
crc have always been fine we had 4 sets of wheels from them custom made i still got mine going strong after 4 years...
so a big up to crc
and avoid merlin for wheel building....
can of worms open and on the floor ready... delcol cowwering behind chair.www.bearbackbiking.com

can of worms???
So I presume merlin are considered good then?0 -
plus I dont really know what type of hub I require, theres quite a few different options on CRC site.0
-
Most online retailers cock up from time to time. CRC have sent wheels out MISSING spokes! So much for hand checked...
Either way, get a superstar lol, cheaper.0 -
Havent thought about Superstar, what are the names of there rims? where stocks them?0
-
Superstar direct - they have a custom drop down of rims, includin Mavic and Spank.0
-
what rear hub do I need then? I dont really understand the options, or what is fitted to bike at the moment0

135MM QR0

My Merlin set were absolutely spot on, but that was a couple of years ago... Heard a couple of people with gripes about them more recently though it's definately not that they will go wrong- my mates' 719s are spot on.supersonic wrote:Either way, get a superstar lol, cheaper.
And at least one of their wheelbuilders is either worse than me at building wheels (and I am crap), or, knows how to do it right but sometimes can't be botheredUncompromising extremist0 -

like i said they are meant to be good and people rave about them,,
but from my experience they were absoloute crap... all the crc wheels have been fine.... but i bet there are people out there who have had problems with crc wheels...
again superstar score mixed reviews,, bearings seem to be a issue with superstar....www.bearbackbiking.com

What's bearings got to do with it?
They could build with non-ownbrand hub.0 -
My Mavic on Hopes from Merlin was a great wheelset and I know people whom have bought wheels from them and had a great build and the service is second to none....like any custom build/new build or buying a new bike it is recomended to check them after a few rides especially the spoke tensions......0

Yeah, there's always settlement if cained if they're not quite there. Er in Whistler, told by someONE they were shonky, and that's the basis....0

they seem to get slated in review on the quality of them....Chunkers1980 wrote:Yeah, there's always settlement if cained if they're not quite there. Er in Whistler, told by someONE they were shonky, and that's the basis....
well on holiday in whistler for 3 weeks. the wheel had already had 3 spokes replaced it went out of true spokes were loose had it looked at by a shop who tensioned the spokes and replaced 2 more. then the same happened again so back to shop who said it would be beter to have the wheel rebuilt. so thats what we did. the mechanic/wheel builder in the shop said it was a shonky build.. didnt give any examples or reasons just made a staement....
now the wheel he rebuilt is still true and going 12 months later and it been abused in whistler for 5 weeks...
unlike the merlin wheel which lasted a few days until it developed problems...www.bearbackbiking.com

Two sets of merlin wheels. One from I forget how long ago and still perfect. Must be form nearly 7 years ago and they have been very abused in that time. The other 12 months old and still running just fine.0

Avoid Spank rims. They are made from cheese. Superstar wheels are awesome, some great deals on their website at the moment. Superstar used to use Spank rims but now use their own branded (Alex) rims.
I have got Hope Pro2 hubs on my DH wheels. Some people like the noise but I just find them annoying now.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
