Here was me thinking that laptops were so passé now that iPad2 is out! Actually, having had an HP EliteBook 6930p for the last two years courtesy of work (Windows 7) I would always consider a laptop over a tablet. I don't have wireless internet at home (not even Broadband due to pitiful BT infrastructure) so an i-Anything really wouldn't work. Personally I don't much care for the trend in widescreen laptops - they are hell to work with, and as for the keyboards on most laptops, they SUCK. What is with this trend for introducing acres of space between each key? If you can actually type (I can average about 95wpm) then these keyboards are God-awful!

Have you looked at PPoe options - there may be a local provider ? developed for the vast distances between villages in Poland I think - it serves our local rural community. £25/month for 20meg asynchronous service with V low contention ratios or £18/month for 2 meg which is fine for me (iplayer/internet etc)
PS - also have never felt the need to go down the tablet root - 2006 13 inch macbook still operating fine for me on leopard - everyone else in the house has gone through at least one windows laptop and they slow down so quickly.0
