Football match fixing?

Bit surprised that no-one else has mentioned this yet, but did anyone see Lyon-Dinamo Zagreb and Ajax-Real Madrid the other night?

Going into the match, Real Madrid were already through in 1st place, Ajax in 2nd, Lyon in 3rd and Zagreb were already out.

So the final place was going to be between Ajax, on 8 points with a +3 goal difference and Lyon on 5 points and -4 goal difference. Cue two wrongly disallowed Ajax goals and Lyon scoring 7 against Zagreb, the last 6 of which the Croatians seemed very disinterested in.

Match highlights:

So what do all reckon? Fixed?

  • Don't really pay attention to the champions league. Was chuffed the Mancs got stuffed. As for your post I'm sure UEFA will investigate should a complaint be lodged.

  • Is it just the unusual results drawing attention or is there any equally unusual betting patterns being reported alongside them?

Too busy P*ssing myself with laughter at City and the SCUM going out.

But at the end of the day Platini is french and hates anyone qualifying other than the french and Blatte definitely does bum tricks for cash.

Now only two English teams got through watch Platini try and cut our number of places.

UEFA have said they aren't going to investigate because there have been no unusual betting patterns, but it's not just gamblers who might fix a match. I imagine that Lyon would pay a fair amount to go through to the next round.

It's also not just the result, it's the way that Dinamo Zagreb let 6 goals in through very sloppy defending and Ajax had 2 perfectly good goals disallowed.

I know that this could be a case of people (including me) making 2 + 2 = 5, but I really can't see how a professional side could let in 6 such soft goals.

I agree - those results looked very iffy to me as well. It wouldn't be the first European game to be fixed, and given the corruption in football *allegedly* I don't think it will be the last.
  • Together they may look suspicious but Man United put 7 past Roma before in the same competition a few years ago and also remember the 8-2 Arsenal match earlier in the season. Dubious dis-allowed goals when playing against teams like Real Madrid is not unusual either.

Football results that are mutually beneficial happen all the time in Italy.

There's no real incentive to stop those happening.

    Wouldn't calling it 'fixing'.
