So, did anyone attempt to cycle in a gale today?

I had the bike in the back of the van today, on the way to the garage to get the winter tyres fitted (to the van) with the intention of cycling home (18 miles) then back to get the van tomorrow.
As I drove in, my wife called to say they were shutting all the schools in the area and by the time I drove home this afternoon (cancelled the tyres thing) it was gusting 84mph.
So, erm, no!
Still howling outside. Luckily we have some woods on our windward side so the house won't be blown away.0 -
MM i tried, complete tail wind going in (excellent). Bloody cross wind on the return. Very hazardous
AndyEvidently i mostly have a FCN of 1. I'm now a lady!0 -
Yea cycled to work at 5 am no probs if a little wet .On the way back at 15.00 side winds were as strong as i have experienced very hazardous. Mainly on farm roads though so not so bad, lots of branches and debris around but i got home safe. Why is it though that non cyclists seem to think that when you set off for home in bad weather like it was today your heading for the North Pole or such and not a journey you do most days of the year ?Gasping - but somehow still alive !0

I had just got my bike back from a fettlin' at the LBS and was looking forward to riding it. As it was COLD in the AM, I was wearing two woolly jumpers, a lifeboatman's type weather-proof, a peruvian-stlye woolly hat, motorcycle gloves etc. In the evening it was quite warm, but I forgot that this bike, unlike my hack that I have been using while the nice bike was in the LBS, has no rack/panniers. The only way to transport all the clobber, as well as the MAHOOUSIVE D-Lock was to wear it all. Not exactly aero! It was NOT a nice ride home."I had righteous got my wheel backmost from a fettlin' at the LBS and was hunt transport to equitation it. As it was Refrigerated in the AM......"0

I've certainly done the commute in gusts of over force 8 (both into and with the wind) but this time I thought maybe not - my route goes over quite exposed hills in places and even the low-level weather stations round here were recording gusts of over 80mph.
In answer to Moray's musing, it's probably because when it's blowing a hoolie, or there's a foot of snow, it's not actually the same journey at all, it's completely different from an easy doddle along dry roads.0 -
Er Yes, made it in reasonably safely this morning and yesterday, but took nearly an hour and was bent over like the leaning tower of Pizza!!!

Of course! Weather is no reason to abandon a commute. Took me 50 minutes to cover the uphill route straight into the wind on the way home. That's 9.5 miles which I've done in barely more than 30 minutes on occasion.......Faster than a tent.......0

I was on shift from Wednesday to Saturday and commuted in everyday. Came up against high winds, rain, hail, freezing cold and icy roads. It wasn't fun but had to be done as the only day I get to have the car is on a Sunday.0
