My son has moved up to an Islabikes Beinn26 and now my daughter is going to get his old Marin Hidden Canyon (and dad can finally stop towing kids!!)

however, my son has bent the crank (I think... possibly just the chainrings but as both move together i think it is either the arm or even the axle)

After lots of reading about lighter, simpler bikes for kids, I would like to replace the double chainring with a single 140mm/34T , and remove the front dérailleur and grip shifter (the biggest weight saving would come from removing the barely functional suspension forks but I suspect that is more work than I want to do ..._

There also doesn't seem to be a lot of choice out there for reasonable money.
I did, however find this one..but it would require a bottom bracket change as well... which might well involve some tool purchases ;)

Anyone have some ideas? sources? experience?

(oh, and other ideas on improvements gratefully received... my inspiration is the following .. but I'm not quite that fanatical or willing to spend that much for a 6 year old!)

SJS also sell a 140mm crankset, might fit your existing bottom bracket?
Good luck!! I went to the tip and have trawled charity shops in search of a cheap set of short cranks I could put on one of our bikes, to no avail.
  • thanks. I'm having a look on there now.. although most seem to have rings that are too big .
As I'm in Bath I might have a look and see if the guys at the Julian House bike workshop have anything in their parts bins :)
