Cdale Reducer Question

Hey there,
I have a 2011 Cannondale Trail SL3 - I have a question about upgrading the fork. I'm looking at a Reba and want to be absolutely crystal clear about what I will need to make my 1.5 headtube with a Cane Creek 1.5 semi integrated headset compatible with the Reba's 1 1/8 steerer (or any other steerer of the same size). Would all I need be a reducer cup, or am I looking at a headset replacement? Feel free to advise on a fork too!
Bike spec: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/can ... e#features
Many thanks in advance, and sorry if this answer is elsewhere, I looked and there is some discussion, but it still wasn't clear enough for me!!!
Cheers,
Rob

If you are simply replacing the original RSTs with Rebas there's very little to do. Nearly all non-Lefty C'dales have 1.5" headtubes with reducer sleeves as standard you just need the crown race from your old forks.
Have a look at the bottom of the headtube you will see the primitive reducer sleeve.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
.blitz - That's exactly what I'm hoping to do, it came with RST Deuce coil/elastomer forks, which aren't the best! Good to know it's hopefully I can sort this without additional bits. I'll have a look later to see if I can spot the reducer sleeve. I may come back with a photo or something if it isn't totally clear, and I'll check it out with LBS as I think they carry some C'dales. Hopefully you're right!
Thanks again0 -
if thats you intention to just swap the forks then it should be as simple as just swapping the reducer to the new forks....
assuming it's the same thing as on my santacruz and my chromag (cane creek headset) it's the part that goes onto the crownrace that the bearing sit on....www.bearbackbiking.com

Nice one - cheers. A basic question I know, but glad I checked!0

If you have time, there is a useful zoomable picture of the bike on the link I previously posted. I presume the bit you're talking about is the little collar type thing just below the headtube. Is that right?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this implies to me that the RST fork has the same width steerer as a Reba. However, it does say '1.5" alloy steerer' on the fork. Any thoughts?
Ta, Rob0 -
The fork has a 1.5 steerer, and I am pretty sure it is 1.5 at the top too ie non tapered.0
-
i had a quick look and it does not say what the forks steerer tube is..
i wolud guess they are 1.5 as they come with a 1.5 headtube frame.. you will know if they are 1.5 as they are a lot fatter....
the part i'm on about is this.. it goes on the forks steerer tube (crown race) and reduces the 1.5 cup (frame) to a 1,18 crown(steerer)

It says 1.5 steerer on the crown. Got to look close! But yep, will need a reducer of some sort.
It is difficult to see exactly what headset is on it though: looks like some sort of external bottom cup, and internal top cup.0 -
Thanks for having a look. I can confirm it's a 1.5 steerer for sure. The bit above the headtube (sorry - you'll have to bear with me!) seems to taper in a bit, but not the headtube itself.
So a reducer it is - am I right in thinking the basic purpose of this is just something that goes on the top and bottom of the headtube that basically just makes the hole through the middle of it smaller?
Something like this?

yeah. but your bike according to the evans link is Cane Creek 1.5 semi integrated
so make sure you get the right one...
like i said before on my cancreek headsets the reducer goe on the steerer tube the crown race. this fits the 118 steerer and goes into the 1.5 bearing cup in the frames headtube...
use this to help you choose.

Cheers for the links - I haven't managed to check out the Nukeproof one as the work computer doesn't seem to like it, but the Cane Creek finder seems to think I need a SHIS:ZS49/28.6|ZS49/30 (1.5" - 1-1/8" Conversion Standard).
That sounds like it might be what I need - I'll check with LBS later on and take a look at the Nukeproof link tonight too. A quick glance online suggests I can probably get the Cane Creek bits for £50 ish, so not too bad.
Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.0
