edited January 2012 in Commuting general
this time of year I am commuting mostly on a MTB with SPD's - on 'nice days' and weekends I use the road bike with time pedals/cleats.

I need a pair of toasty warm and dry overshoes to fit both shoe types - suggestions/recommendations, please!

Mike

I've got Planet X neoprene ones which do the job well on DHB M1s, I haven't used any others so don't know how they compare.

the issue is partly the overshoes and partly the shoes - finding some that will definately fit both shoes is proving difficult .....!

Are you sure? The cleat positions are similar. I think the MTB overshoes are just advertised as such not for fit but more for being more resistant to damage from the undergrowth etc. Otherwise it's just a case of finding an overshoe that will fit over your shoes.

Certainly, those I have had (crap Endura MT500, Planet X (good) and BBB (very good) would all fit both road and mtb cleats and shoes subject to the physical size of the shoe.

Yeah, I don;t see why the PX ones wouldn't work with road shoes, and they definitely work with MTB shoes.

I use the PX ones on a pair of MTB style shoes and over my road shoes, no issues.

i currently use Endura Luminite, which seem to be fine....so far
    Keeping it classy since '83
  • I am voting for Endura Luminite as well.

I did have Campagnolo Neoprene last year. Can't say for other brands but Neoprene material seemed too soft, started to slit after only couple of use. If you're walking with your overshoes (not taking them off as soon as you're finish) than you'll damage them pretty quickly.

Other issue was the zip. It broke after the third use - it could be that I have the wrong size - but zip doesn't look like a good idea with Neoprene material.

Velcro's and material like the Endura L. (don't know what is) seems much more durable.

However, Campag's were a bit warmer due to its thickness.

Not so - zips are fine with neoprene; you just need a better quality overshoe. The Planet X velcro type isn't bad but the overlap seal is nowhere near as good as the zipped neoprene BBB overshoes which have a welded heel area to protect the zip from stress. The neoprene Pro NPU overshoes also always get good reviews from their owners. Me - I wouldn't risk a penny on Endura overshoes though the MT500s aren't the velcro sort. Main problem with them was an ultra undurable sole.

I bought the PX last year as a winter bundle and they're brilliant. Better than the smooth neoprene ones as they nick and tear very easily. PX dead easy to get on with the huge velcro flap and do the job really well. Oh and nice big reflective strip at the back too.

Yep, it's the zip you need to watch. Endura overshoes have very flimsy zips which break v quickly. Go for BBB, they have YKK zips which IME last a lot longer

Though even with the YKK ones I tend to be very careful with them - forcing zips closed isn't a great idea.

One other thing I do is reinforce the bit under the toe which I usually give a hard time to (mainly on the unclip side obv). On my Planet X overshoes a bit of the fuzzy side of Velcro stitched on keeps things intact whilst the BBB ones get a piece of inner tube glued on. Both very effective.

  • I received these last week : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BBB-Heavyduty ... 1e68fcae7f

First pair of overshoes so not a lot to compare them to, but they do the job well. Fit is great and feel good quality, bo issues with them coming loose.

I commute on MTB with SPD's and have road shoes with Look pedals / cleats and have tried them with both with no problems.

  • Great post this, though to muddy the water I'm using a pair of endura overshoes that are now on their fourth winter for a 10 mile daily commute

Just bought the BBB Hard Wears. Used them with my road shoes and the dhb MTB shoes. Fit both, and I'm very happy with them so far. Warmer than the PXes IMO. Avoid Endura - the zip is awful.

  • I ended up super glueing a cut down old inner tube to the bottom of the overshoes.. I know I should take them off to walk in. Seems to do the trick just fine though.

Been through 3 winters with overshoes and finally bit the bullet and got some shimano mw81s. just brilliant. over shoes just seem like a pointless faff now.

No - I did think they were less bootlike than the Northwaves (hence my comment) but I may have found a link with a wrong picture as the one I see now looks not so far different to the Northwaves (though perhaps less well sealed at the velcro) so I'd imagine they do much the same job . But I'd have to get enormously long ones to fit my wide feet - Shimano shoes are far too narrow for me.

yeah true they are narrow but thats ok for me. the ankle seal is pretty good. and i put the stirrups of my tights on the outside of the boot. came home iin torrential rain @4 celsius the other day and had warm dry feet!

I had some BBB neoprene ones and some Prendas Windtex ones. Even though the Prendas ones are a lot thinner and, in theory, less insulating, I find them a lot warmer than the BBBs due to the wind protection. The ones I have (the originals) are end of line now, and only available in small sizes and odd colours, but the new stretch ones should be just as good, if not better.
