Need bike for single track. Hardtail or full sus?

Hi,

Been riding bikes on and off since I was 5. However had my first taste of single track last weekend at llandegla after riding canals/XC and I loved it. I was only on a Giant, not sure of the spec but it didn't cost more than £400 new and it was a hard tail. Felt a bit rocky at bits due to not having a decent front fork and no back suspension.

Basically if I spent a bit more on a hard tail, maybe £500 (second hand) would this get me a decent hard tail for single track or are hardtails normally just not really thought about when it comes to single track?

If there benefits stacked more towards the full sus I could probably stretch to £6/700 - again second hand. Just looking for a bit of advise really guys!

Cheers.

in my opinion it's best to learn and hone your skills on a hardtail..

second hand would could get you a good deal but this time of year there are some good deals to had on 2011 and probably a few of last year 2010 bikes.... £500 could get something semi decent/average.. £750-£1000 would land you something decent....
i'm sure people will be putting up links of deals and bikes soon...

Personal choice. Mine's FS but you'll get more HT for your money.

To me upgrade to full suss and sell what you have to give you more cash...you will pick up a cracking FS for around £700 on ebay and on the classifieds (I would wait until after xmas as you get more on offer) the FS will be more comfortable at the likes of llandegla and other trail centres..being slightly more forgiving than an HT you will be able to ride a bit faster and be a tad more aggresive as the bike is doing a lot more work...

I have both, and if I had to choose the HT would be the looser easily...

Personally, i'd spend a couple of months getting used to the trails/kind of riding you like, then if you still want to upgrade, grab yourself a nice FS early in the new year. That way you'll have got a good "feel" for riding and be able to reap the benefits of FS :D
There'll either be sales on, or loads on here / ebay from people who's new year resolutions didn't quite turn out how they planned...
