Hi,

I need help and advice with two things.

1st. I've just won a set of handbuilt wheels on Ebay. I don't really know much about handbuilts. ( I know I should have asked first but I didn't think I would get close.) They are Ambrosio Zenith hubs on Mavic open pro rims. Are they any good/worth the money. I have Fulcrum 5's at the moment, how do they compare? Here's the link

2nd How can I keep the boss from finding out. I am in so much trouble, I promised no more bike buying for a while. I think it's an illness

Cheers

For £50 you can't really go wrong, winter training wheels or turbo wheel, should be fine.

IMHO your Fulcrums are a better wheel.

£50 for a pair of wheels - worth it even if just for the parts alone!! Check the spoke tension when they arrive and see how it goes. The hubs are of decent enough quality (Harry Rowland is a pro wheel builder and likes them - try a search).

How do they compare - well it all depends on the quality of the wheel build really but the Racing 5's would be my 1st choice. I'm very tempted by the same wheels at that price - even if just as a spare set for winter / turbo trainer bike. Looks a good buy to me anyway

£179.95 on Buy it Now!!! You got a bargain really
  • Great, thanks for the quick replies. I thought for the price I'd done ok. I feel quite 'upmarket' now having a spare set of wheels.
Just need to sneak them past the wife now.

Don't worry there are a few here with the same illness!

I don't know what's happening to me. I've only had the bike a few weeks, got a cheap 2nd hand Bianchi to start with, but i've gone mad. I keep hitting the buy button. I've been off work for a couple of days and ordered a new chainset, bars, baselayers, gloves, top and now the wheels. I hope it doesn't all arrive at once. I need meds (and probably need an ambulance when it does).

No mention of a helmet, sounds like you'll need to be wearing one when 'the boss' finds out! They all seem like essential purchases to me.

Good luck with the wheels, anybody seen who the seller is? FPFB aka Dave Hinde :(
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

They are, all of them. Problem is i'm now sitting here looking at a cassette and tyres to go with my wheels, to save all the 'grief' of swapping over. Time to turn pc off i think. Dead man walking

Just done a forum search on him. Guess it's hold my breath time then.
  • I've bought stuff off Dave Hinde before without any problems, so maybe it is something that just goes wrong occassionally. The wheels look great and I would say, for the money, a good buy.

As you new to all this, I can only say that the illness does not improve with time, you just learn to live with it. Pretty soon it will be spring, and you just know you will have to have a summer bike. And on it goes...........

I've bought decent wheels from FPFB before. Similar thing, he seems to sell various wheelsets as 'buy it now' at reasonable prices - but also does the same as auctions and if you're lucky, you can get a very good price. I got a pair of Hope RS-Mono Pro3s for £130 when they normally go for just under £300 (Mavic Open Pro rims, Hope hubs). They arrived in a couple of days.

No, you bought Mavic Open Sport rims - still a bargain at £50 though....

    You have to a Campag-shod bike haven't you? :)

Good man - you learn fast. Just need to come up with a good excuse for when you have enough parts to build a 2nd bike up :D:D

Where are you, I can dig out some not-too-worn 23c tyres if you're local (London)?
