Ran out of degreaser on Sun so popped to Halfords -
£9.99 for a litre of Bike Hut degreaser - £5.49 for a 1 Litre can of Engine Degreaser
The engine can carried a warning about not using it on/testing on an inconspicous area for 'laquered or painted surfaces' so I opted for the BikeHut stuff as it said nothing at all about any limitations on where you can use it. Did I pay £4.50 extra because of needless paranoia or was it a sensible choice to avoid damaging my paintwork?

Engine degreaser, e.g. Gunk, is pretty harmless for modern painted finishes. It's certainly a lot cheaper. I use cheap-as-chips white spirit myself.- - - - - - - - - -

5L of Swarfega Oil & Grease remover is about £9 from B&Q and will happily at pretty heavy dilution levels (20:1 works fine). The engine degreaser is probably more concentrated and caustic - but could be diluted.
Either way - both sound pretty dear from Halfrauds :P0 -
My general feeling is avoid Halfords like the plague but - my local one at Bishop Aukland is so close to me and I was in the middle of a major clean up I gave in to the temptation! That said there are guys who work there who are really helpful and seem to know their stuff.
I think non bike branded anything is always going to be better value and I need to seek one out that doesn't have the scary clause! There's a few motor factors round here so if I can ever get away from the kids .... at a time when I wouldn't go out for a ride ...0 -
Just use you tongue... and be vigorous0

Excuse me! I come from a good family and we always wipe the grease onto bread, water biscuits or crackers before we eat it - eating with your tongue indeed, how rude!0
