Hi all,

I have found what appears to be a brilliant deal on a 2011 Sirrus sport (£350 inc delivery). This is even cheaper than the 2012 Sirrus (basic).

My question is should I go for the better model from last year, or the newer more basic model?

I don't know whether the newer model brought with it some much needed design alterations; and I don't know what you get extra between the models.

Any advice would be gratefuly recieved.

Cheers

J

This year's is only likley to be a change in colour. If that's an issue for you then get 2012. If not, 2011 all the way.

I bought a 2007 bike in late 2009 that the bike shop wanted clearing.

It was identical to impending 2010 bike, except the 2010 bike had poorer components and a higher price tag. Go figure.

As above -- this year's change probably doesn't make a jot of difference. If anything, I'd think the newer bike will be lower spec because no-one's got any money.
Buy the older one, keep it maintained (chain, wheel rims, brake blocks) and you'll be grand.

If you want us to be more specific about those two bikes, you'd need to post (a link to) the bikes' specifications, although as a general guide, look at the groupset (gears and shifters). They'll doubtless be Shimano, and the better ones have names like Altus, Alivio, Deore -- I think I got the order of perceived quality correct-ish, but you'll need to dig out the kit attached to the bikes you're looking at... I'm not going to go looking for you.
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.
  • Definitely go for the higher spec bike. Specialized Sirrus use the same frame throughout the bottom/mid range but add better components as you go up in price.

Also over the last 2-3 years or so there have been price rises in bikes so you get less for your money - if that has continued into 2012 models then the 2011 will certainly be better value.
