Popped into my local bike shop and spotted a 2007 kona stinky for sale. It's been owned by a guy who has kept it in excellent condition and never ridden off road and there is zero chips on the down tube or the chain stay. It's just been fully serviced and ready to go. It's up for sale at £300 but I might be able to get it for less. What do you guys think? I could run it a bit and try dh and if I don't like it and keep it in good nick then I should easily get my money back at least? What do you guys think?

a 07 kona stinky never been used off road.... ummmmmmmmmmmmmm like the one lady owner on that used car....
a big hitter like a stinky,, not exactly a commuter bike.....
if it is in the condition you describe and has no cracks in the welds or killer dings on it.. then you could grab yourself a bargin.. also check the pivots for play and the bearings.....www.bearbackbiking.com

for that price it is fair. dont expect much from the fork as it is poor."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Well I kinda know the guy and have only ever seen him go to the shops on it and that's why he is selling as its no use doing that! Also I don't know how you could go off road and not get a single chip in it? It's honestly in excellent condition and zero play in the bearings and no welds. It even has the wrapping on the fork stanchions still lol0

7 inches of downhill madness for less than £300 quid? Hell yeah!0

Second hand boxxer or 888 needed then0

if you know and trust the guy then get the bargin of the year or bargin of a lifetime before someone else does.www.bearbackbiking.com

Well I got a bargain as far as I am concerned payed £280 and is now up on my stand in the garage. Been very snowy here so not had a chance to get it out and test it too much but the back end feels like new with no play in it at all. Cam already see that the fork is not going to be the best and probably will upgrade the brakes to hope items but damn it feels good for the money! Think the other guy was happy to get rid so win win situation.0

New project thread and pics needed I reckon0

Yip could be an idea indeed! Need to give her a wee clean and polish and will take some pics and post. Got a wee Orange Crush and Orange Blood to post also, looks like I'd better dig out my camera!0

Would you not rather have some decent brakes instead?

For £300 you could split and sell it for about £600! You know it's a bargain, go buy it!

If I was to keep it what forks and brakes would be a reasonably priced upgrade for her?0

All depend on what you want, Coil, Air, Travel etc, as for brakes I have Hope M4 expensive but I love them.0

Will look up the hope brakes for sure! Always loved them as a company and try to buy stuff made in Britain so a nice bonus there. Thinking of going with a long travel coil fork rather than air but unsure of wether to get triple clamp or not0

As were the M4s I owned0 -
Looks like some more research on ,the braking front is needed then. Not many good reviews out there for the hope M4s either am afraid. Any suggestions on a fork? Thinking a long travel single crown may be the answer? Or I have seen a couple of cheapish second hand boxxers on the bay. Mind you, they were more than the bike cost lol0
-
mine arent m4s i have the tech 2'.... not the most powerfull brake out there.. but feels better than the wooden feeling of the avids,,,
go for formula they have been faultless for me in the last 3 years.. and i been beasting them in whistler for the last 3 years to.......
got admit i'm liking the look of the new shimano brakes the xtr and xt....www.bearbackbiking.com

Yeh the shimano xt and xtr do look nice indeed. And get decent reviews. Always thought Hope made outstanding products but seem to be left behind by some of their competitors on the braking front according to reviews.
Any advice on the forks? I have seen a set off boxxers as an example for £340 but would have to budget for a service I'd imagine? Would like to keep this bike a "jnr" DH bike to differentiate it from my other bikes.0 -

This is Hope down to a T. When their products came out, the attention to detail and quality was higher than much of their competitors. Nowadays they have been caught up and passed, but their prices remain high. Same goes for Thomson and a lot of smaller CNC companies - the big boys in the far east with their forging apparatus are producing better products for less now.0 -
thats were their nick name hopeless comes in then...www.bearbackbiking.com

My mazz were crap, cartridge blew twice in 12months, although they were 2008 model so no idea on the reliability now, there are some 200mm dual crown domains on CRC for £350 and quite a few other models in the sale.0 -
Hmmm they look good to me indeed! Would make it more of a jnr DH bike sticking with the dual crown setup as well. Will look very snazzy on the front of the Stinky0
