Hi guys, sorry if this isnt the right place for this post.
ive recently had an introduction to DH at Ae forest, i bought an 08 Gaint glory, bit old but will do for me, however theres a few things ive had to sort.
I am currently running a 11-32t casette, a 38T front ring and a medium cage mech. One of the lads i know that does Dh uses a close ratio casette with a short cage.
Can i use a close ratio casette and a shortcage with a 38T chain ring?
can i use my 11-32t casette and shortcage mech with the 38T ring?
im thinking about a short mech so it stands less chance of getting clipped by rocks and all
any constructive advice appreciated
cheers

It is no different to the info in the FAQs you need a mech to cover the range of the teeth you have. A longer one is no problem as you may also need to consider chain grow as the suspension goes through its travel.
And ,
Mechs getting hit by rocks choose a better line and it very rarely happens."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

gain grow, im guessing this is stretch/pressure on the chain as the suspension progresses? i'll take a look at the faq's0

typo corrected.
Chain grow."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

im not sre if i follow it, from what i see if i used a short cage i would have chain slack with a 38T chain ring and 11-32T casette?0 -
a 32-11 gives a range of 21 so any mech that covers that. any mech that has a number equal or greater will do.
chech the range of the mech you want.
see the makers site for info or the manual."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Nothing wrong with the setup you have at the moment tbh. DH is very fashion/fad led- racers use close ratio cassettes so weekend warriors think they have to as well, but racers also have the experience and time to choose the right gearing for each track, and generally professional mechanics to do it for them. A standard wide-ratio block means you can have one setup that'll work well everywhere, much more practical for the normal rider.Uncompromising extremist0
