If most of your riding isnt up big hills then i'd say go for them. Couple of hundred grams more than an equivalent priced "standard" rim at that sort of price for a pair of wheels but the extra aero should more than make up for it on the flats.

More importantly - they look pretty cool

Interesting one this one - kind of like a "poor man's cosmic carbone" I guess. Carbonzone sells them for about £220 delivered, but they are 42mm and are heavier: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/42mm-carbon-a ... 2a14bbd915
I guess Planet X have managed to find themselves a nice little "niche" in the market, a bit pricier than the "full" carbon Chinese wheels (but only "a bit"), year round braking track, similar weight.

Taking into consideration the VAT Planet X are selling these for the same price as the full carbon chinese jobbies.

I'm not sure about full carbon clinchers direct from Chinese sellers. Too many stories about warping rims and tyre blow outs. mroli haven't you got some full carbon clinchers?

I think they're completely different rims. The Carbonzone ones are deep section alu rims with a carbon wrap, where as the Planet X ones are an alu rim (shallow profile I guess) with a carbon faring. Hence the huge difference in weight. The Carbonzone wheelset is just too heavy. The Planet X rims must weigh in the region of 450g each I'd guess to get the claimed weight (which as PeteMadoc suggests is a bit suspect since the 52mm and 60mm wheelsets apparently weigh exactly the same).

I'd be interested to know if the Planet X rims can be bought as rim only cos I'd probably buy a pair if they are.
    More problems but still living....

I raced and trained on Chinese carbon clinchers this year and so far so good.

Where did you get yours from? I'm thinking of just getting rims and building them up myself. There's a guy on weight weenies who bought a whole load of these for his team, seemed very happy.

Kind of makes the Planet X wheels look insignificant. Question is, is an alu brake track necessary

Not really I would rather buy from Px, as it means I could get them on the phone if there were to be any issue, and I think there customer response is up there with Wiggle.

Oh perfect, needing ideas for Christmas present from the wife and family. I think in the 52mm these will be lighter than my Kysrium Elites that came with my bike. I think they are a 2008 model, so that would actually be a weight saving :)

Anyone got any of these yet??

Significant difference from mavic cosmic SL's???

Wonder if they are any good, was thinking these or handbuilts from wheelsmith but the difference is pushing me toward these. Or is it a case of you get what you pay for??

I wouldn't get too carried away with carbonzones weight claims. I bought 60mm carbon clinchers earlier in the year and mine are 1,704g for the set

Absolutely no worries with my Carbonzone (full carbon) clinchers yet - used them for the summer - probably done about 750 miles on them and they have been great. Used them mostly for TT's, but also a couple of decent long Surrey Hills rides.

When I "retired" them for the winter, took the cassette off and had a good look at them - freehub is a little chewed, but only a little, still running smooth and looking good. Braking was ok with supplied carbon pads (not as bad as I was prepared for them to be).
