Shades - more hassle than mud in the eye?

Proper muddy 3 hours today and I was subject to countless blobs of mud in my eyes. I hate wearing glasses and opt for contacts when riding because of the agro from misting, smearing, and more fiddly stuff to deal with instead of just riding. However today the mud stepped over the line and I need to defend myself!
So I'm bombing along thinking how is this going to work? If I get shades then within minutes they are going to be speckled/blobbed and after half an hour or so it'll become untenable. I'm absolutely covered in dripping mud (having a great time by the way)and I don't carry water just energy drink in my bottles. Have I really got to stop and find a clean hanky every time? My eurika moment was to fit a little mister bottle of cleaner in a handy to reach holder and just spray myself in the face!
Opinions from those older and wiser would be much appreciated

Mud and bugs in the eye with contacts is just a nightmare. Had them infected, scratched my eye thanks to mud getting under the contact and irritating for days after.
Eye protection for me always. Seem to do okay when it comes to misting with my Madison d'arcs. Only mist up when I stop. Mud isn't too bad, just wipe away. Gloves with material that acts as a wiper helps. Main problem I have is with persistent rain which just gives me big rain blobs all the time to look through.
Interchangeable lenses are good for me too, giving me a choice of lens for the conditions, and if one gets too cruddy I can swap for another (except shades on a dull day, too dark).
Proper protective bike glasses though, or safety specs (e.g. Bolle). Have smashed up expensive glasses in the past and I only go cheap now and they're fine.
Oh, and Neogard on the forks (or similar). Stops mud flying up in your face.0 -
contacts and shades for me too.
mud in eye wlth contacts bad
streaming eyes downhilling bad

Even with the anti-mist spray ?0 -
i think most shades mist up when you stop due to the reduction in air flow
the only time i dont wear mine is when its raining cause the combo of condensation/rain/mud means i cant see sh*t
the rest of the time, its less hassle than getting hit in the eye by a bug
i use the Endura cheapos0 -
I got these a couple of years ago and they don't mist up a great deal.

The only time I ever have problems with glasses fogging up is when i'm climbing. Simple solution there is to not wear them while climbing, just hang them on the shirt. Not going fast enough to get mud in the eyes, and they certainly won't water from the speed.0

mudguards.... simple....
i have oakley jawbones vented and radars. they steam up when you stop or when climbing, but dont take long to demist,, i usually remove them if i stop.....
as for the rain i just lower my peak on my helmet to stop the rain going on my glases... saying that the coating on the oakley lenses is quite good at keeping water at bay it beeds and runs off.....
even with my radars and a front neoguard i still get the occassional eyeball strike, followed by a torrets outburst..www.bearbackbiking.com

Best too keep anything out of your eyes that may cause an infection like dog poop."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

contacts and glasses with anti fog on for me. Fox shorts come with a lens wipe anyway and I have a wipe stitched into my other shorts so i'm good on that front. Fogging when you are stood still and hot will always happen0
