Anyone running non UST Tyres with stans no tubes? I tried it on cut slicks for a bit of road ridding and it worked. I have put on the highrollers trying them tomorrow.

Anyone use it? Any Issues?

Cheers

i used to run normal tyres on my Red Metal 3 rims, which were UST, with no probs

Aye, works a charm- lots of rubber in most Maxxis tyres, and pretty good beads.

Soon as the beed cracked it sealed straight away. Hope it stays that way tomorrow.

What about on tubeless rims, like CB Iodines ?

Are USTs heavier than regular folding tyres, and what about LUST?

I have LUST xc highrollers and Larrson TT but they are no good for our winter mud. That's why I want to try my regular DH tyres.

I think tubeless are made of a double skin and the walls are stronger. Main advantage is lower pressure for extra grip.

UST tends to be heavy. TBH it's a specialist format, like dualplies but more so- the sort of thing you use if you need to, rather than a default option. So many standard tyres tubeless up perfectly, and then there's a decent number of tubeless ready tyres that don't have the weight penalty. UST tyres are supposed to seal up without sealant (they don't always), but that's not really much of a benefit. They're very tough though, so good for people who tear tyres often.

I don't use any UST tyres any more, for me there was no point at all. Some of mine are TLR (tubeless ready) and some are just standards, but you do have to do your research with standards as some just don't work well at all

If I can get 2.35 Minions and High Rollers to work tubeless then that would be perfect for me as that's what I like and have spares of.

Should be fine then. Slightly harder to get on in the first place than a good TLR but still one of the better tubeless non-tubeless tyres IME

in the case you don't want to use ust the best choice is wire version, cheaper and safer...

I always buy single ply folding as they're light and easy to get delivered.

Don't think there's any benefit to wire bead here myself, the folders are a pretty good fit, secure well to the beads...

well, i don?t have tryed with hr in kevlar, only kenda nevegals and i have loosed air and crush three times with it, and with maxxis ignitor have some severals looses..... why not try the wire version, is tougher and it works perfect as tubeless ready tire, also is cheaper....

    But heavier.

I had a folding Minion and a wire Minion on one of my bikes for a while... Haven't a clue which was which since they both fitted to the bike the same and stayed on right too (mind you, I've worn out about 5 folding Nevegals run tubeless on Stans rims and only ever had one burp, and even that took being mashed off a huge lump of France hard enough to leave a chunk of wheel behind too)

  • Be careful, I now only use TLR type tyres.

Had lots of success using standard tyres tubeless (with stans) then one day I clipped a rock and almost all the air burped out of the tyre. Figured it was a one off, two weeks later clipped another rock at speed, all the air burped out of the tyre and I ended up sprawled on top of my bike. I still have a scar on my shin where part of the bike bit me.

Even if bead seats and seals ok, it may not as secure on rim as it should be, and could let you down at just the wrong moment.

how much pressure did it take to seat your tyres mate? were you doing them with a track pump? and are they the LUST tyres or just the standard folding bead type?

iv had issues with my Specialized tubeless ready tyres on my crest rims so any info i can get about tyres that work is a bonus.

The tyres arent tubeless tyres just ordinary Highroller Single ply Super tackys (wired not folding). The rims are bontrager tubeless ready with a bontrager plastic rim strip on the inside.

I was using a normal track pump. I get mixed results when trying to pump it up. First one I lifted the rim tyre etc with one hand and pumped with the other. Straight up no issues. I normally keep pumping till about 50-60 psi so it seals solid then let a bit out after I have spun the tyres and got the sealant all around the inside of the tyre. The second took a lot of work pumping while trying to keep the tyre formation. All I ws doing was blowing air out the side. So I would set the tyre down on the side that the air was coming out and as I pumped either lifted it a bit or rolled the tyre so the shape would catch and slide onto the beed. I use a lot of fairy liquid and a tiny bit of water the more bubbles the better.

Hope that makes sense I can waffle at times. It does take a bit of work as I say one day I can get it straight away next it takes ages. It does often seem you have done something wrong but it just hasnt bit. Let me know how you get on.

BTW Mine are working fine with no issues. Here is a video of me out this morning using the new Scorpion boom mount I made for the gopro. I made this helmet mount a while back but havent had a chance to use it. Wanted to go somewhere without trees so I didnt break my neck if it cliped a branch. The light was perfect this morning but the trail was still a bit slippy and rutted. Needless to say I took it easy with that strapped to my head.

Just a different angle than the normal videos.

Here is a few photos of how I made the mount for any of you thats interested:

ok thanks alot matey. i though from the stans no tubes in the title you would be running 1 of their tubeless rims. but i imagine they wont be too far away in terms of similarity.

its was good information for what you said about manipulating the tyre whilst pumping. may have to try that 1.

but as long as you managed to get the high roller all sealed up sound and was holding air thats good.

was toying with the idea of either high rollers or minions before i bought the Spesh tyres, seeing as i cant use them i may invest in some.

What was your issue with the Specialized tyres? I've used 2bliss tyres on my Flows no bother- in fact one of the easiest tyres to fit that I've used.

when i tried to pump them up to seat on the rim they stayed in the centre cavity.

with a tube in and without, lube on the rim and the bead. tried with a track pump and with a compressor. i phoned up a Specialized shop near me, they said they are a nightmare to do on Crests, and they suggested i try a different tyre manufacturer!

i contacted Stans in USA via email last week but had no response, and the place where i bought the wheels from are apparetly looking into my problem.

managed to get non tubeless WTB's on no problem tho. but their shite so i wanted my Spesh tyres!

  • I've got some folding Minion DHFs and High Rollers to go on my Stans System Sunringle tyres wehn the wheel arrive. I've got a compressor too so hopefully it should be p*ss easy.

Wow, that's a bit crap. Brand new Crests? There was some muttering on STW that they've made the rims slightly taller to make tyres a tighter fit (people had trouble getting the tubeless ready schwalbes to fit). Not good that...
    Uncompromising extremist
  • yep brand new. i emailed justridingalong today and they said they recommend maxxis tyres as they seem to fit and work well tubeless. he also said my tyres maybe too tight for the rim, which goes with what your saying about the rim being on the upper tolerance for a good air seal. which i understand, otherwise they wouldnt work.

but its a bit of a b*stard when you buy a set of tyres and you cant use them. grrr!

so my next purchase will be a set of either High Rollers or ADvantages.
