Are these any good? It was an end-of-line shopfloor model at my local Halfords. I bought it for £399. It seemed to be okay and they'll be delivering it in the next few days, but I don't really know much about bikes so was wondering is anyone has experiences of the GT ZUM S2.

There weren't that many small-framed bikes in the store or available to order and this was a 16" frame. They'll be fitting a water bottle, lock, pump, mudguards and a couple of other bits and bobs onto it.

One thing I noticed was that the seat couldn't be lowered a lot so they'll be cutting a couple of inches off the seat stem (the pipe thing that goes into the frame) as I wasn't able to get the seat low enough to meet the frame.

Seems strange if the seatpost is too long to fit the seat tube of the frame. However if you need the seat post that low to meet the frame, I would think the bike is too big for you and the handlebars are going to be very high in relation to the seat post. It doesn't sound like they have given you good advice as regards the size of bike you need.

On the positive side, I see the bikes seems to get good reviews on the Halfords site, but I would suggest you ensure it's definitely the right size for you when you get it delivered before you take it out for a serious ride, so if it doesn't feel right, you can take it back in exchange for a smaller size or refund.

I paid £600 for one of these five years ago. The spec has gone down since then. It had a very small made frame - ie the top bar drops sharply at the saddle end. I sold it because it was too small. Seemed okay (16") when I bought it but always felt I needed the bigger model. Was a lovely bike - half way between a hybrid and a mountain bike (Zaskar Urban Machine). The original old style GT Zaskar carbon model was a classic - costing £1,500. I had no complaints about the ZUM 2 apart from the fact I bought the wrong size. Treasure it.

    Thanks all.

I think the seat post issue is due to the water bottle cage holes in the frame (the inserts inside the frame). They'll cut a couple of inches off and virtually all of the seat post will be in the frame so there won't be any danger of the seat falling off!
