26 or 29er for a newbie to MTB's

been road riding for a couple of years now and absolutely love it, determined to keep cycling this winter and although it's been mild so far this autumn/winter it can't last forever till the snow comes.
I was in in two minds, either a turbo trainer or go over to the dark side and try a MTB..... Well, tried a turbo and hated it after 5 minutes-thankfully my LBS agreed to take it back.
So, borrowed a Specialized Carve today and did about three hours in Grizedale forest and liked it, the problem is do I go for a 29er (like the carve) or look for something like a rockhopper which has 26inch wheels?.
I am quite a big lad and from what I read/hear a 29er may be better suited to me for the type of cycling I want to do with it which is decent forest tracks-not interested in anything too serious at this stage in my cycling career!
People may wonder why I mention only specialized bikes, would be willing to look at other makes but the LBS that I would probably buy from are agents for them.
Any advice appreciated.

Your options will be more limited on a 29'er, greater choice of 26'ers.
Ride a few of each if you can and see what fits/suits/works best for you.Cheers Nathan.0
