Versatile 29er - SS & 1x9

Thoughts and advice please.
I'm looking to build up a versatile 29er hardtail. I'd probably run it singlespeed most of the time, but would like the flexibility to run it as 1x9 for the odd race or epic ride. My thoughts are turning to towards the One-one Scandal 29er, which looks good for weight and price and has the swapout system. The other option could be to go down the EBB route (Niner Air Carbon would be nice),but not sure I can find an equivalent frame for weight and value.
My idea is that when I want to run geared I simply bolt on the derailleur and shifter (should be no reason to even disconnect the cable between uses?), change the swapouts, chuck on a cassette and I'm ready to go. I'm planning to use just one set of wheels (Cobalts on chain reaction look a good price)
Is it as straightforward as it sounds?
Is chain tension enough when running a rear derailleur to hold a chain in place up front with no bash ring/chain device?
Has anyone got experience of building up a bike like this?
Any advice on good/good value build kit?
I currently run an SS 26er hardtail and geared full-susser and race both from time to time - SS on short course stuff, dualie for 100km and 24hr (team) stuff. Don't really want to get rid of either but fancy trying a 29er and this seems a good place to start. Oh and I'm doing all of this in Australia, by mail order. Whilst they have great trails here bike shops are very expensive, although I will try and get a few bits from the LBS.

I've had a scandal and i have said Cobolts
I dont know what sort of build you would be going for but i ran mine 1x9 and with a superstar chain device up front and a Sram PG990 cassette with SLX shifter and mech, it was light, very light.0 -
Thanks for that - sounds good, the sort of thing I'm after. Ideally I'd like to go without a chain device, or maybe just use a bash ring. I've got an old xt crankset I could bolt a bashring onto.
Was yours the 29er swapout model - how did it ride? I've asked on-one for geometry charts but had nothing back yet. I'm keen on it being as short a wheelbase and as 'flickable' as possible. But that might just be my 26er predjudices.
Primarily I'll look to use it for general XC trail duties and XC racing which for me is a mix of short club events, 100km marathons and team 24hr racing. Currently use SS for the first and the dualie for the other twoA Lemond (FCN 4)

thats what i was using it for, not the swap out model as its only just come out.
Very flickable and short wheelbase with a 80-mm fork.0
