What inner tubes?

Quick question...

Is there much of a difference between 'cheap' inner tubes and 'expensive' ones?

I have always used Tesco tubes (£1.80-odd each) and never had a problem with them, but now I have Presta valves and they don't do them. No problem I thought, but a quick clicky to CRC reveals there's quite a few to choose from and I am wondering what the real difference is?

Thanks in advance

  • If the tesco ones work for you and are cheap why change?

It's all a bit of a trade off, yes thicker ones may help reduce punctures, but you pay in weight.

Just make sure you have ones that fit your tyre towards the minimum spec - that's all I look for. Mine also are a patch work as I believe in fixing them rather than buying new all the time.

I buy whatever's the cheapest around. Never had a problem.

My latest purchase (Trance) uses Presta valves, Tesco don't stock them.

*edit* cooldad got there before me!

The originals are Kenda's, just found a lot of 4 for £12 delivered. Ordered. Seems that the more you pay the less rubber you get and the more prone they will be to pinch flats...

Valve is part of the tube isn't it? Does it matter what valve you currently have, unless you only have a pump that does one type with no adapter?

Anyway, tubes are tubes to me. Puncture resistance is dealt with by the tyre, how much pressure you run, and being careful when you fit the tube and the condition of the rim.

If you're a weight weenie I can see you might want to pay for a lighter one, but may as well go tubeless for that.

what rims are on the new bike.. mavic usually have a plastic inseret making them presta if you remove the insert you can then use schrader..
or you could drill the rim to fit schrader valves...

    Don't drill the rims.

I wouldn't drill the rims too. It weakens the rim IMO. Anyway, I would buy any tube that fits your requirements> presta valve (the French version of presta is nice), and required tube diameter.

The rims are Alex DP17, presta only. I wouldn't touch them with a drill - why would I - just buy the correct tubes!?

Anyway I ordered these in the end as my tyres are 2.2, and the Kenda tubes were only rated to 2.1. Also they seem like good quality with less seams to fail, and a tad thicker than most: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/110779412733
