Hello, does anyone know anything about this jacket?

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gore-bike-wear- ... cket-aw11/

Would this be suitable for riding during the winter with a couple of base layers? Any information would be appreciated

Thanks!

    I would thing so !!

I've got the Gore Phantom II, and it's a great jacket. I've been out in it down to about 4C with just a long sleeved merino base layer under it. when the temperature really drops, a base layer LS jersey and the jacket are fine.

You should be fine, it looks like a good price !!

  • I've got something similar, and I've used it in sub zero temps with 2 base layers, and I've been fine, they're great jackets, and at that price I'd say a bargain! :-) (I bloody hate being cold as well!!)

This is the one I have for comparison

  • Many thanks for the advice/info. I was originally looking at the Gore Phantom, however, I would never take the sleeves off to use as a jersey so I think this is a suitable option

    Very tempting indeed

I was looking at the Phantom to start with and came to the same conclusion about the sleeves.
In the end I went for one of these:

They are a really good price if they have your size/preferred colour.
I would thoroughly recommend it. The most I have ever worn underneath it is a Nike long sleeve base layer and an ordinary long sleeve (non-thermal/windproof) jersey. Anything more and I am too hot.
It is worth looking a little deeper in to why there are some jackets at £90 and some at £140 that appear to be the same. From memory, some of the lower priced variants only have windstopper fabric in certain areas for example. It is worth going in to a shop that has a good range and trying some on. They all "fit" differently too.
    Hope that helps.
    Gary.
Oh and I feel like I've been raped by an Orangutan  And I've got legs like Girders
  • I looked into the Oxygen ones but I'm a bit of the heavy side (short and heavy) and the Oxygen ones are the tightest fit according to the gore website so i don't think i'll be able to squeeze my belly into it. From what I've read the Contest SO has windstopper material both front and back, so may be a touch warmer and not as well ventilated as the others but I'll only be wearing it in the winter so should work fine

But take the ratings with a pinch of salt, it states that the Phanton is suitable for Spring / Summer. You'd f*cking melt in the summer in that jacket, even with the sleeves off !!!
Late Autumn / Winter / Early Spring is a better range.

  • I got the Oxygen from here on sale http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0046S6LPA at 79.99 (xxl only) and find it a great jacket for all year round. Not sure if that helps
  • I have two of these jackets they are excellent, they are totally windproof, good at keeping a shower/rain off and keep you toastie warm. Even when wet they keep you comfortable and warm. This fit is relatively tight, I would of preferred a tighter fit personally but they IMO look good. I have black/red and white/black. Bargain.

I have one. Great jacket but with one big flaw - at the rear there is a single unzipped pocket which:

    a) May not be big enough to carry all your stuff
    b) Fills up with rain and road muck off your back tyre if it starts to pour down. I wrecked a phone because of this :(

Fit is fairly tight - very different from the Phantom which is baggy.

Phantom is anyting but baggy in my opinion. A year ago I tried the biggest size they do - XXL and couldnt zip it up plus the sleeves were too tight. I happily fitted an Altura Night Vision XXL though and load of other makers XXL. I have just lost 3 stone since mid-summer (from 17.5 stone to 14.5) and have now JUST been able to buy that Phantom XXL - which is still snug. I am now L or XL in every other manufacturers clothing...

The Phantom is lovely though - one of many but one of the better things about the weight loss was being able to buy one...!

There are many bargains to be had with Gore wear at the moment, 30 or 40% is not uncommon. It pays to look around, for example:

I have a phantom which is very good - warm and well fitting.
