Morning Guys,

Popped over from the Road section for some advise (Dont hurt me!)

Looking to get a cheap cheap mountain bike on cyclescheme for £700.

Seen these two that I like the look of, unsure which to get.

http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/125873.html

or

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/why ... e-ec030083

Now I know the whyte had a great frame, and ok components (I would prob swap wheels out) but equip on cube seems better (No idea about frame)

will just be used for popping down to train station on (only 10 mins on bike) and then mucking about with a couple of friends when weather is too bad to go out on road bikes (of fancy letting off soem steam.

p.s, any other suggestions welcome as well.

Thanks guys

    Although Iove Whyte...I would have the Cube as the spec is way better.

    If the world was flat, I wouldn't be riding !
  • What are the main areas that let the whyte down, compared to the Cube (been a while since I knew anything re mtb's

    To compare the drivetrain to Shimano road bike stuff, I'd say that:
    Acera=2300
    Deore=Tiagra
    SLX=105

    The drivetrain of the Whyte is all a step down from the Cube.

    The forks are the same.
    I'd rather have the Cube's shimano brakes than the Whyte's Tektros.

    Do you need to use Cyclescheme? Look at how much you'll save, now that VAT isn't taken off, and consider something like the Carrera Fury, which I'd say has got better spec all round, and is £600, though it's normally easy to find a 10% off voucher code.

    Edit: actually, the main advantage the Fury has over the Cube is the forks, other than that there's not much in it.

  • higher rate tax bracket, so more than worth it!

    Think ill go with the cube then, unless somone can throw a curve ball in there?
  • Squill stick to the road where you belong on your squeaky BB lol

  • Squeaky BB is no more, but you will be happy to know that I carry on my legacy in the form of a creaky seat tube im trying to fix on the new Giant...

    The forks should be a decent step up.

    For the sake of a couple of quid a month, I'd go for it.....especially if you're in the higher tax band...£££££ :wink::lol:

  • Acid it is then!
  • I'd be getting this on the bike 2 work scheme if I was after a hardtail

    I know it's a bit dearer, but you can afford it :wink:

    I have the Whyte 801 an I'm really pleased wth it but I think it depends on how heavily you are planning on upgrading in future. I believe the 801 has the same frane as the £1500 810.
  • I did think about the 801 with a view to upgrade, but I want to use my "upgrade" money on my Road bike next year (decided I need some 404's) so want a bike I can get without having to do too much to it.

    Sadly, just got new car, so have to be a good boy for a bit as its created a bigger financial black hole than public sector pensions have!
  • Do you really need a mtb then? What off roading if any do you do?

  • I used too do alot with a couple of friends (who still do) so fancy getting involved again!

    The money comment was tongue in cheek, it simply translates as I spent alot on the car deposit, so dont want to touch savings ATM, and it needs to be cheep enough to get past Mrs squill!

    Money is set aside for 404's (or whatever I change my mind to at summer) so need to keep MTB cost low. This way I really wont notice the reduction in wage at all. (though the scheme I can get is up to 2k, so having to hold myself back alot!!)
