Grips - Hands Hurt

Can anyone recommend some chunkier grips for those of use with fairly long fingers? I currently have a set of Superstar LockOn grips which don't feel very comfortable. I find I often have to stretch my fingers along the trails as they begin to hurt whilst curled around the bars.

+1 to the above. I've got the Superstar Excel grips and really like them. Be aware though that they are 15mm wider than a standard grip, therefore if you like your controls close to the grips then they may not be for you. If that's the case I'd recommend Lizard Skins Northshore grips as that're a simalar diameter to the Superstars but standard length.0

Set up the levers to suit you also, and you might find adopting an always ready stance helps, i.e. having your finger(s) always resting on the brake lever. One of the tips given to me was to do this. Supposedly gives you faster reaction than ungripping and getting your finger onto the lever when necessary, and yes I do find I don't death grip the bar so much as I'm used to that all the time, feather the brakes more and don't find I jam so hard on them. More so with single finger braking set up. I don't have the levers point down so much also, but that's a preference thing and depends what kind of stuff you do.
Also look at the lever reach. Too far and it's an awkward grip.0 -
I've had the superstar excels and they're no thicker than the standard ones, just longer.

Try these, very comfy soft rubber and standard length.http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=12851595

Thanks for the replies chaps. Unfortunately the Excells will be too wide for me. So would appreciate some more suggestions of alternative thicker grips .0

Sunline Waffle grips, thicker than normal and super comfy.
I had the same problem as you and switched to theses grips, never looked back!I love the sound my tyres make on dusty single track!0 -
Thanks for all the replies, I have opted for the Ergon GP1 grips in a small-size as their geometry is very similar to a set of grips I had on my old Rockhopper and served me very well for some 4 years with no hand-pain. The reviews also seems very positive with many people saying it cured their tingly/hurting fingers when they used the standard round grips all bikes come with.0

For mountain biking, I would recommend the GS1 from us.

Actually, in terms of the ergonomics there isn't a huge difference between the GS1, and the GP1..... it just weighs a bit less, and looks more aggressive.0
