Hmmm- Wind - do I risk it?

Sat at work looking at local weather stations measuring wind gusts of 40-50mph. Looking out of the (admittedly dark) window, it doesn't look too bad though I do have to cross the Kessock Bridge and these winds are perpendicular to the bridge. Wife has just phoned saying "I assume you'll need collecting" (though she has an ulterior (shopping) motive).
What to do?
What to do?

Ride.
She can always collect you half way if you're blown under a bus or something.
After all, if the Dutch can do it, why can't you?0 -

Good idea - I'll tell her to pop a body bag in the bootROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Well, like all great leaders, I dispatched one of my team to see what it was like
He's just reported back to say he was nearly blown down the embankment (he doesn't live very far away either - nowhere near as exposed as my route). Since Mrs Meanie is already in town, a lift home looks to be my best bet...ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

I thought this referred to a different sort of wind, so my planned response about the risk of following through probably isn't appropriate...

Got to depend on traffic and how up for a laugh you are. I've cycled over the tops in the peak district in a 60MPH cross wind. Like all extreme weather, if it doesn't actually kill you then the sheer ridiculousness of being stuck out in it can put a huge grin on your face. Mind you, if this is a busy road or has exposed drops, it could kill you!0

Well the Kessock Bridge was closed to high-sided vehicles so I wouldn't have been blown under a big lorry at least. I've always said that high winds are one of the only two things that will stop me (deep snow being the other) just because it is dangerous crossing the bridge. Anyway, home now. It was ridiculously windy - the flagpoles at work were bending over and those springy-based signs were bent over flat to the ground. I think I made the right choiceROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

Down here in the big smoke not riding due to wind is wimping out big style. Certain extreme exceptions apply, one night in 1987 I think. Where you are I think the weather can probably get a bit worse, just don't make a habit of wimping our or I'll confiscate your Alfa.0

Was getting blown about a bit. Side wind tried to kill me a couple of times. Be ready for them and brace your arms into the wind.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

Yes it was blowy here too so I collected my 3 large d-locks for extra weight as well as my data centre toolkit - because i'm a MAN.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.

LMAO So the windiest I can find in your part of the world is 24kmh and the windiest here was 82kmh (122kmh if you count Cairngorm). I'd need 30 large D locks and the entire data centre to stop me being blown into the Moray Firth

PS - wind is binary. It's either on or off. You do or you don't. You don't. We do. MTFU. :twisted:Faster than a tent.......0 -

Well this woman showed me what a wuss I was - she had to be rescued from the sea by helicopter because she went winkle picking in a canoe  8)

To be fair, we'd probably call you a wuss for not riding back out yourself. Oh and MTFU, those are baby winds.0 -
Heavy sleet this morning - big wet blobs and only 1C
Various people at work had tried phoning me last night to say don't cycle.
OK OK - I'm a wuss, I admit it. My MTFU lotion ran out last week and it's on back order at Wiggle (and we all know what that means...)ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

Was a bit windy in Glasgow last night and rather on the fresh side this morning, with a little breeze. Still, with me having only 1 more week of official commuting to work, then just a small bowl of MTFU required."Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0

Well here it was nothing really, max gust while I was on my way home was a mere 82kmh or so and the rain was down to a light deluge by the time I got halfway.
But as for these southern softies - was 1987 the last time the wind reached gale force in London then? It's hard for city dwellers to understand that weather can literally be a life and death issue.0 -
