Hi,
I'm after a bit of advice. I'm after some 700c/29er wheels that I can run 25mm road tyres on and I'm not overwhelmed by the choice? I'm worried if I buy 29er's then the rims will be too wide for the tyres. What width rims should I be looking to run 25mm's. I've looked at having some built but again rim choice confuses me.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers
Matt

I had the same trouble, although I was looking for some new wheels to suit my flat bar road commuter. I ended up building my own with Shimano hubs and Mavic A719 rims. Not the lightest, but works for me. 25mm tyres need a road rim really.

Unless you can find some takeoffs you'll be looking at either getting some built or the new disc specced cyclocross rims....29ers will be too wide for 25mm tyres.

  • Hi Benpinnick,
How have the Mavic's held up to pot holes etc? I'm not too stressed about weight to be honest but I do want the wheels to be tough as the roads around here are third world!

They've been fine for about a year now I guess. They seem like strong enough rims, well built, eyelets etc.

I've got a Boardman CX, the external width of the wheels on that is 25mm, the same as my 19mm internal MTB rims, so I guess the CX wheels are about the same internal width. I've got 25mm tyres on there and they're fine.

You could get a wheelset built around Mavic TN317s, 17mm internal width 29er rim. I'm considering it tbh, need to find out how much the CX stock wheels weigh first.
