I do a mix of running/cycling and I'm not about to use the weather as an excuse to stop training. What do you guys wear/recommend and is there anything you'd suggest as a budget option? I've never bought tights before but I'm thinking they'd be a good start... :)

    DHB gear from wiggle is a pretty good start, Decathalon make decent stuff for the price. as I'm sure you know, avoid cotton like it's acually made of thorns. Layer up with a few breathable Ts, soft shell on top (as they can be picked up pretty cheap and have a decent amount of water repelency - Lidl have them from time to time), shorts and/or leggings. Go cheap and look on ebay for some army surplus waterproof socks - amazing what warm dry feet can do for your ride.

    Tops wise, most of my stuff is regatta. Base layer T's, approx £5, softshell top £20, waterproof jacket £20, and all have been great in all sorts of weather.
    As for legs, I stick a pair of muddy fox cycling tights under my shorts, approx a tenner.

    Oh yeah, sealskinz socks too, nothing better than dry feet.

    Dry feet, warm feet, waterproof socks are a must, I have sealskinz and they are brill, I wear shorts all year no matter what the weather (we are, ard up north!). layer up as already said and a light waterproof/windproof jacket is a good idea, get some waterproof gloves as well again sealskinz are good and wear one of the freebie neck warmers from the mags.

    Cheers guys. Will cycling specific tights make running uncomfortable due to the padding in the groin area?

    Could do, just get 2 pairs, one with the padding and one without. Or run faster and keep warm :D

    Gobs (and anyone else), you might have some luck here.. I got some dirt cheap baselayers and compression tops etc, and they've been fantastic so far. Kept me nice and warm on the recent night rides I've been doing :)

    I've also got Endura Baabaa merino baselayers, and the ones in the link above have kept me warmer than they do :)

    Sealskinz are a damn good purchase too, although not cheap for a pair of socks.. worth it though, warm, dry feet make the ride so much better!

    You keep them on in bed?

    Sealskinz=warm feet, as said above.

    As for tights, maybe buy a pair of padded undershorts or padded bib shorts, (I prefer bibs for comfort) which can be worn on the bike all year round, with a pair of unpadded roubaix tights which you can wear in the winter for running and cycling?

    I've got some of the DHB roubaix bib tights, and they're really warm.

    Which way round do you wear them, shorts under the bib or over them? I've seen people do both

    Sorry, I've got padded roubaix bib tights, so I don't 'mix and match'. But always wear them with the padded bit next to your skin and any extra layers over the top.
