Inspired to build first bike - Advice Please

HI,
I have got the bike bug in last few years and have through circumstance ended up with 2 very similar 5" full sus bikes. I have a clear preference so intend to sell the one I use the least and replace it so that I have 2 different bikes for different occasions/ events/mood etc. (Anyone want to buy an 08 stumpjumper?)
My preferred option at the moment would be to build a 29er over next few months as sale/ 2nd hand parts are sourced. I could use this for longer distance events and could also have a spare set of narrower wheels to use it for winter nights or cyclocross etc.
I am struggling to get definitive info on 2 counts that relate to me being a big unit (18.5 stone):
1. Am I too heavy for any 29" wheels worth having, due to the longer spoke length? (some people suggest that this is the case being a heavy rider)
2. If I can overcome the above, am I restriced to an aluminium frame or would a carbon frame support my weight offroad safely?
All advice welcomed before I learn the answers to 1+2 the hard way.

Depends on the frame and wheels, rather than the material and size ie how are built. Why just 29er though? Have a look at intended usage, and weight limits (some list them for XC gear).
Are you after building a hardtail?0 -
Like most of us what I really need (want) is about 10 bikes.
I've got the 26" full suss which I have used and loved for everything from an hour mess around in the local woods to the trans wales. What I want is something a little lighter and better climbing for when overall speed was the priority over fun. Alwayd fancied an Anthem X 26" for this job but just felt that the 29er may fit the bill and could double up for a bit of cyclocross. Perhaps I am trying to get one bike to do too many things.
If 29er what frame/ wheels should I concentrate on in your experience? Or do you think a shorter travel full suss is the best option?0 -
I think a shorter travel XC full susser would be quite similar to what you have anyway.
There is a lot of hype and myths about 29ers which is why I advise caution. My advice would be to try some out, then see what sort of geometries and components you like.0 -
Only tried an anthem x 29er full suss which felt a little strange at first but was certainly quick on the climbs and my mate who owns it seems to be about 10% faster on it than his Stumpjumper over a given route.
Can you enlighten me as to some of the 29er myths if you would please. Really want to get this decision right and some knowledgeable comments may sway me in the right direction.
Reading betweeen the lines I assume you would advise a 26" hardtail to fit the bill?0
