Shimano Ultegra 6700 Shifter Issue on Roubaix

Hello,

My Roubaix has the latest spec Shimano Ultegra groupset, including the 6700 carbon bladed shifters which are 10 Speed on a compact. Cables and outers are literally brand new, and shifters, cables and outers etc probably only done 1700 miles since new.

RIding into work this morning, when i used the inner paddle to shift down the cassette, i noticed (during a quick shift down a few rings on the flat) that the paddle pushed wide as if it wasnt selecting to release the cable.

When i "let go" and tried again it selected fine, and then on the next change slipped again.

I have an event this weekend which is highly annoying.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Paul

The only thing i can think is that the grease inside is sticking your rachets but this generaly only happens when they get older never had problems with ones as new as yours, spray some gt85 or oyher easing oil into the shifter and work it thoroughly and se if that helps.
  • I have this occasionally, it seems to happen if you nudge the brake lever as you hit the paddle - like trying to shift up and down a gear at the same time.

+1. Happens on my Ultegra summer bike and my 105 equipped winter hack. Nothing to worry about.
  • Cheers for the replies.

Given it a good clean and lube so will see how it performs on tommorow commute.

I get the same thing on my 6700 shifters regularly.

It seems to me that if I push the inner lever slowly and gently, it sometimes misses the ratchet and simply moves inward freely. It doesn't really bother me though, and I live happily with it [any many other problems!!!].

It only affects down shifting, so it wouldn't be a problem in terms of missing a shift going uphill, which could of course be nasty.

I think i have sussed it out this afternoon.

If you apply any sideways pressure inadvertently on the brake lever, as you might when wearing gloves for example, then there is a failsafe built in to the levers when you also try and use the inner lever at the same time.

The shifters cannot shift up and down at the same time!!! So therefore the inner lever simply moves inward without engaging.

Try it - it only happens on mine when, because i was wearing gloves today, i accidentally caught the bi lever while shifting down.

My 6700 RH shifter gave up the ghost completely after a simple cable change this summer.
I less surprised at a fault occurring with yours.
Just refused to upshift. The internals needed to be replaced.
I dont know the precise details but it had something to do with the cable guides inside but I just shoved the bike back into the shop and had to wait 2 months for a repair (cost free) for the parts to arrive from Japan or wherever.
New bike next year will have 105.

I bought an old bike for my nephew and it had RSX shifters, the old type. They had the same fault. I sprayed in some light oil, worked the mechanism a few times and they've been fine ever since.
